PARISH PROFILE
If there's a parish in Metro Cebu that can claim two municipalities, it's the Parish of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish of Inayagan. Located in 18 km. south of Cebu City, it sits right of the boundary of the towns of MInglanilla and Naga.
The parish has five barangays under its jurisdiction: INAYAGAN and COGON IN NAGA and GUINDAROHAN, part of TUNGHA-AN and TUNGKOP in MINGLANILLA, all with a land area of 1,562.16 hectares and a population of 20, 413. Even with the only five barangays under it, the parish has 25 chapels.
Eighty percent of the women parishioners are into dressmaking and embroidery as their means of livelihood, while 90 percent of the menfolk are employed either as construction workers, masons, carpenters or plumbers. Because of the meager income of the households in the parish, only a small percentage of the youth can afford college education. A sizable segment of the youth population cannot complete their secondary education because by their parents to find jobs to help augment the family income.
HISTORY OF THE PARISH
The parish of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was created in October 22, 1986 through a decree issued by His Eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu. The date coincides with the annual fiesta of the parish. It was also on this day when Rev. Fr. Agustin "Blurred" Abella was installed as the first parish priest in ceremonies led by the late Coadjutor Archbishop Manuel Salvador and 42 other priests.
And why Our Lady of the Holy Rosary as the parish Patroness?
She was the choice because she was the Patroness of the chapel of Inayagan, the seat of the parish.
PARISH BIRTH PLAINS
As in any endeavor, it's the first few steps that are difficult. Initially, the parish priest had to cope with the absence of a rectory. Fortunately, Manuel and Ezer Tapasao, a newlywed couple at that time, were kind enough to lend their small house to the parish priest so he could utilize it as a rectory. With a total area of 28 sq. m., it only had two rooms., one serving as the bedroom and the other as the office, kitchen, and dining ang living rooms. The people also had to contend with the size of the temporary church which had a sitting capacity of only 100. Still an even bigger problem was the parishioners' reluctance to detach themselves from the "mother" parishes. It took them four years to learn to support and serve their new parish. However, the helping hand of the members (men and women) of the Legion of Mary was enough to boost the spirits of the new parish priest.
