Maite marine sanctuary was established in June 6, 2009 through the assistance of Peace Corps volunteer, Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF), Office of Provincial Agriculture (OPA) and San Juan Municipal Agriculture's Office.
The total area is 6.3 hectares and covers the coral reef area, seagrass bed and intertidal zones. The sanctuary is being managed by two fisherfolk association: Maite Resources Development Association (MRDA) and Maite Fisherfolk Assocation (MAFIA).
In order to have 24/7 guarding and enforcement of the ordinances, fees are collected for use of the MPA.
