Nothing special in terms of accomodation, but definitely did the job! Coffee in the morning was great though

Awful backpackers lodge. We were booked to stay here for a week, but we arrived late because our journey took longer than expected (we drove from ChCh). We saw on the door that there was a phone number for the night manager/guard who lets late arrivals into the hostel. We tried to call this number numerous times, however it just kept going to the answer phone. I walked to the bar next door to ask whether they knew any way of getting in, he suggested that we continue ringing the number (he used to work there) and we would eventually get in.
After waiting on the street for roughly an hour we managed to get into the lobby as another guest was leaving. We searched around and found no staff/night guard anywhere, and some guests came and chatted to us. They told us that there are no night staff and that they weren't sure what we could do. We found the owners phone number on the building "Warrant of Fitness" posted by the door so we called it.
Immediately we were met with rudeness and accusatory terms about how we obtained their number - to which we politely explained the situation. They told us that the night guard goes to sleep at night and turns off their phone after 8pm (seriously?!) so there was no way of getting in.
They basically told us to leave, so we searched around for a campsite, and slept rough for a night because we didn't have a tent. We ended up staying in the Southern Backpackers hostel down the road the rest of the week which was lovely.
The owner of this hostel was extremely rude, didn't offer any solutions whatsoever, and was saying it was all our fault because we arrived later than expected. Every single hostel I've ever stayed in has had late-arrivals services, and this hostel offers late-arrivals services on its website but it's a lie. Most good hostels will ring you to ask where you are if you haven't checked in on time.
We did try to call ahead to let them know we were late but we were driving through the Catlins and hence had no reception.
The inner city campground and Southern backpackers hostels are much better options, and next time I'm in Invercargill I will stay at one of those.response / report this review -

Been here a couple of times since the change of ownership, food and decor is nice but it is overpriced. $2 for an extra dollop of sour cream is crazy. All the staff I have dealt with so far are incredibly staunch, seem to pick and choose which customers they are friendly to and got our orders wrong both times we went there. No apologies offered when I was accidentally overcharged either, just looked at blankly like it was my fault.

Ate here for lunch on a lovely sunny day, however the whole experience was ruined by the fact that the doors were wide open and so much cigarette smoke wafted in. It was disgusting. The food was pretty average, I ordered the chicken sandwich which tasted like chicken drenched in sweet chilli sauce.

Good location with a cafe bar downstairs. Friendly staff. The room is quite damn with high ceiling. Public areas like kitchen, bath rooms are a little bit messy due to other backpackers. Other than that, not a bad place to stay.

Until now, I haven't had any problems with any hostel or accommodation in New Zealand. Stayed for one night with my friends at Tuatara Lodge in Invercargill and not happy with the service provided at all. The staff checked us into the wrong room (which was already taken), so we went in and woke up the person in the room. After that, they checked us into another room where the sheets weren't clean. We complained about that and finally they gave us the third room which was on the 2nd floor. This time the room was nicer and had windows but still with unclean sheets. Very bad service. The only good thing about this hostel is the location.

Facilities all present, but lacking in their ability to function. Items that aren't labelled as 'out of order' only work about 20% of the time. Staff on call at counter don't care about anything, let alone helping guests. Don't even attempt to wash clothes here. However, well equipped kitchen.
