The golf club was developed on sacred land, claimed by Maori under the 2002 treaty. To date, the tapu over the area has never been lifted. Historically, tapu land was regarded as 'areas to avoid' , as wandering onto those areas invited misfortune onto the intruder, their family, their home, their business.
