I didn't know what to expect but I had the best time this morning. The two staff were helpful and caring of those in the whole group but I was truly impressed with their ability to encourage and give confidence to the children. Amazing people skills! The trek was lovely today with a gentle sea breeze and new spring growth in the forest. I'll be back for more.
This was a really amazing experience that was super fun! Really friendly and experienced guides and well trained and friendly horses!
Our experience was mixed. The positives included horses that are obviously well cared for, lovely varied terrain, and adequate catering for experienced riders, although as an experienced rider my horse was rather dull. Of the other two experienced riders I think one was pleased with her experience while the other was not. The downsides were essentially a nose to tail ride for three quarters of the two hour trek for experienced riders, and for the entire time for beginners. It was disappointing that the order the horses walk in was mostly defined by the guides, meaning that family and friends could often not walk behind or in front of each other, let alone next to each other, even on the beach. I understand that some horses like each other less, but I think this could be worked out at the beginning when horses are allocated, because an important part of the experience is getting to share it with friends/family. Although there could potentially be an issue with horses breaking out of a walk while riding next to each other on the beach, I think this would be unlikely as the horses are mostly very quiet. Finally, at least three of the 10 or so in our group were clearly unhappy with the nose-to-tail walk the entire time, as there were no opportunities for beginners who were feeling a little more confident as the ride progressed, to try a faster pace. I know the guides would say this isn't safe, however having worked in horse riding operations in the past, I think this can be done safely, ie. a guide waits with the riders who want to try a trot while the others continue along the single track, then the triers trot to catch up with the rest of the group. We did this regularly where I worked and this maintained safety, while giving people a chance to do something more than walk.
Thought we ride more time on the beach not just 10 min., the ride was ok. It should be two groups vor beginners and experts.
First time experience with house riding for one hour ride, we enjoy every moment of it! Friendly guide, nice Muriwai beach view, beautiful horses.. Definitely do that again!!
Excellent full-day trek. Spent most of it in the forest (which was fortunate when the brief shower came in). My son got to try his first trot, then canter. The beach ride back was fun too. Great guide (thanks, Petra).
I was in Auckland for work and had one day off. I've been riding my whole life so it's something I try to do whenever I'm traveling. I have to say from my first contact with Muriwai Beach Horse Treks they were nothing but helpful and professional. I inquired which ride they thought I would enjoy most since I'm an experienced rider and after their response back I decided to go with the 2 hour trek. I originally booked the ride and a shuttle pick up/return trip for 8AM, but then decided to move it to a later ride. They got back to me quickly and we're nothing but accommodating about switching the times and arranging my pick up from Auckland. Everyone was very friendly upon arrival to the site. It was myself and 3 younger girls who were all new to riding. They got the horses ready, gave a brief demo on how to ride and then we were off. There were two guides with us and once we went a ways down the beach we split up and one guide took the girls and the other guide took me for a few canters down the beach. We had a few more opportunities to canter when we were on our way back through the woods. For it being a two hour ride it felt like we were out for a long time (in a good way!) and covered a lot of ground. Both the beach and the trek through the woods were filled with beautiful scenery and the guides we're very friendly and conversational the whole way.
The horses are all lovely and very well behaved and trained. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and hope to be back to Auckland again soon so I can visit these guys again!
If you're in the area I highly recommended this outing as a great way to see a lot of New Zealand you wouldn't see otherwise.
