I was expecting a lot more but left disappointed. The staff were lovely and there was a nice atmosphere, but the food we tried (mole negro, chicken enchiladas) was strangely bland and tasted like it was microwaved. I have spent some time in Mexico and am sad to say that the food we had here is not really a good showcase for what Mexican food (not tex-mex) can be like.

Great Mexican food. Highly recommend. Peace is small and is a shop as well as cafe. The Mexican coffee is really good too.

Stopped by for lunch and was impressed with the range and selection of Mexican items (mostly Chilli peppers) they had on sale including (presumably) house made tortilla.
The menu is plastered along the wall above the door and glass window. You order at the counter and they give you a number to put on the table. The decor around the restaurant was quite interesting but we sat right behind the door and it was quite echoey.
The food was quite nice but possibly a bit spicy for some, including the chilli hot chocolate. The Renello came with a tortilla to mop up the sauce and the Aztec pot had shredded pork at the bottom of the cheesy goodness. Portions are decent and the taco they have is the size of a burrito without the sauce. Most items are under $20. Nice place for a fairly tasty lunch.response / report this review -

Been coming here for many, many years, back when they were Auckland best kept secret. But the good news - they're still as great as ever and the food is truly authentic regional Mexican - like nothing you've ever had anywhere else.
I particularly recommend: the Fish Tostadas - marinated fish pieces on a flat corn taco with fresh salad, Soft Tacos (marinated Beef or Chicken in special marinade, then grilled and served with salad inside a fresh flour tortilla and the Hot Chocolate is superb. Everything they offer is so good. And they have changing specials as well as the regulars - so the menu is seldom the same twice - and so you don't need to eat the same thing each time unless you really, really want to! Regardless you'll definately want to come back for the regular dishes and also to check out the specials you've not yet tried.
Tip: If you've never been - come on a Saturday before or after lunchtime, its usually a bit more leisurely then and you can order and try all the dishes that take your fancy - believe me you will want to!
Weekdays at lunchtimes they're very busy with the lunchtime rush of locals who work nearby - sometimes with queues out the door - thats how good this place is - the regulars will queue, in their lunch hour, to eat at this place.

My favourite place to dine either for lunch or dinner and Ellerslies best kept secret. The food is authentic, delicious, fresh and well priced. My favourite dishes are the chicken enchiladas, beef soft tacos and the guacamole and corn chips. Its simple interior hosts a couple of church pews so not your luxury diner but it sort of makes the experience so fantastic. :)

What a lovely experience! I was cold and hungry after walking there from my Air B&B, not realizing that they didn't open till 5pm and it was still 20 minutes till But the owner welcomed me in was very friendly. I ate a fresh and delicious chicken soft taco! I'm from Texas and have had heaps of Mexican food in my day, and I can honestly say this was some of the best! Thank you Mexican Specialities for your hospitality and good food!

Food was tasty, the owner was very friendly and our meal was quickly prepared (admittedly there weren't many people dining). The spicy hot chocolate was a standout and they customised some of the meals to our (vegetarian) meal requirements. Would return!
