FRANKLYN VILLAGE PERSONAL REVIEW
As an “affordable housing” complex, the “Franklyn Village” in Nelson Tasman District offers advantages not seen elsewhere. For one thing, it’s close to Nelson City Central – an invigorating 20 minute walk - providing shopping and a cultural experience on par with other major cities, and has all the Supermarkets close to hand as one would expect.
It’s also situated opposite Nelson Hospital; convenient for tenants requiring constant or regular medical assistance or check-ups.
The complex accommodation is from affordable single rooms up to fully furnished, 1 bedroom apartments for couples or families. It provides adequate cooking facilities, bathrooms, TV lounges and communal areas. It also has designated smoking areas (banned elsewhere) plus recreational opportunities for kicking-back or working-out (garden courtyards or gymnasium). It also runs a free weekly shopping Taxi, has a district nurse visit fortnightly, has bar-b-ques and caters café meals.
There is a plethora of different nationalities and personalities here, creating a diverse and unique community living spirit, but allows one to remain private, or to mix as desired. This is a fabulous experience and will broaden horizons.
As a tenant for more than 12 months, I am aware of negative comments voiced in the media by evicted residents. However, these have simply acted irresponsibly, selfishly, and offer no respect either to others or themselves. Their constant use of banned substances was the real cause of their being asked to leave. Ignore them.
The vast majority of current live-ins have a positive attitude and most just adore living here for the long-term. They really appreciate the efforts of staff, particularly the cleaning ladies whom endeavour to provide a professional service daily for the entire complex, and who interact with tenants with an easy-going nature, assisting where they can.
The maintenance staff does miracle work keeping things running, and without complaint when things break. Security staff also provide a safe-haven effect and deal quickly and even-handed when situations call for it. Likewise, the office staff and general manager keep things on an even keel, even during the odd storm.
It’s really exciting that management has – with the owners blessing – instigated a long-term plan to improve all living standards within the complex, without increasing rents. This is to be applauded when one considers the ridiculous costs being asked for accommodation within the district.
Everybody, no matter their personal circumstances, are given a chance here to get on their feet; to catch their breath; to slow down and think; or to begin saving for the future.
It is one of the better “affordable housing” projects in NZ, and as a world traveller I would recommend anyone give it a try. Ignore the sour-grapes! This place gives you a chance with a smile, or just to enjoy an interesting or varied existence for a while. You will grow and expand your outlook, I promise.

I have been here I think for 4 years and I have never experienced anything bad since I have lived here as I am in a good wing area. It has the good well behaved people wing like the top wing people. You can go and talk to the best staff that we have here and are lovely to get along with.

We were shocked at the conditions here especially after dark. It was total mayhem for our entire stay. Drunk violent people roaming around everywhere. There is total disregard for safety at Franklyn Village. Smashed windows, holes kicked in walls both interior and exterior. Alcoholics, drug users, criminals straight out of jail. It's basically a "Half Way House". Police seen often having to be called here.
Don't waste your time and money staying at this place. If you have any standards that are even close to normal you'll certainly regret ever booking into Franklyn Village. The manager should be sacked at the very least, but a far better option is to close this place down entirely. It really is a total disgrace to a beautiful province like Nelson.

►BREAKING NEWS◄ - Man murdered here last night
Police have launched a homicide inquiry after a Nelson man died in hospital following an early morning assault.
Bruce Andrew Mortimer died about 11pm on Saturday after he was assaulted at Franklyn Village, a former nursing home converted to low-cost housing, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The 46-year-old suffered head injuries in the attack and was flown to Wellington Hospital, where he died.
A 17-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, both from Nelson, were arrested after the assault.
They were initially charged with assault with intent to injure, but police said further charges were likely once the full results from an autopsy were known.
Nelson police had a team of about 20 staff working on the investigation, and specialists were examining the scene where the fatal attack happened on Saturday, July 2015response / report this review -

This place is fantastic, staying in a halfway house was very enlightening. I am never going to commit a crime, the thought of having to experience anything like jail again has scared me straight. The drugged up beneficiary residents, the continual police presence, the smell and facilities make the prison experience VERY real. My cell (room) got to smell like cigarettes, my prison transport (car) had food thrown on it. Plus I got to stay up very late because of drunk inmates playing loud music and having a good old conversation - if you can call swearing and yelling a conversation. All in all, I think my stay should've been free since my tax dollars run this place.

Whoever wrote that last review was probably just been release from jail, or the local mental ward Avoid this place like the plague. It looks all nice on the tour but stinks like a cattle market in the main halls etc. Try smoking a cigarette without your entire pack being tapped. I've been in some craphole places before, but this one is ranking highly just now. The local cops are always round here, at last check i spotted them 3 times in one day. Everyone has tattoos etc. If that's your thing, the jailbird way of life, then for sure make a booking asap!
