I stayed at Base for a week but I didn't like the experience.

Reading the reviews, you could see that they said in August 2017 that they replaced the boiler to resolve the issue of having boiling or freezing water in the shower due to no temperature control Well, they might have changed it but the problem is still existing ! My roomates and I had to go outside our ensuite room to use the only shower on the floor with a temperature control

The cleanliness is alright but they don't change the duvet covers which stink a lot

The kitchen and dining area seem a bit too small for the amount of people.

Wifi is only free from 7am to 7pm.

However, the staff is very friendly and helpful ! :) The location is great and being on the 2nd floor, I didn't have any problem hearing the bar downstairs.
    That's a good point !

Showers are either scolding hot or freezing cold, the music from the bar attached is blasting all night (I'm 3 floors up and still couldn't sleep), people are constantly slamming doors and screaming down the hallways, the heater is only on during the night so it can get cold during the day the only good thing is the staff is friendly and consistent with cleaning, but even when they clean they come in slamming doors and don't care if you're sleeping or not. Wouldn't recommend at all.

the hostel is huge with plenty of separate bathrooms but very tiny hot cilinder. So if you want to feel very cold and freezing water experience in the shower go for this Hostel or avoid to stay here as you cant regulate the cold water and wash your hair or body properly in hot water. The hostel is dedicated for young people so during the night you can hear dance music from the base in second floor so you can "dance" in your room whole night . :-)

It's mostly alright for what it is, which is as cheap an accomodation you can get. My only problem is that you can't change the temperature of the water in the showers. You have to have a really quick shower if you don't want to scald yourself. Like really quick. Quicker than i can manage.

Although the shower could have been better the staff were amazingly friendly and the cheap drinks and food in the bar downstairs didn't hurt

Was a great experience staying in this hostel, it is great value for people looking for a place to sleep. The wifi and showers were pot luck to whether they worked or not, but everything else was great. Cheap drinks and events on in the bar downstairs every night gave a great chance to socialise, as well as being located in the centre of Queenstown making everything easy to walk to and get home from. Along with helpful and nice staff for any other queries. Would definetly return if time comes again.

wonderful staff in the front desk.
shower is not hot, it was terrible that snowy outside with cold shower.
this hostel has bar on the ground floor, it was so noisy until 0:00 or so even 3rd floor.
other people are so noisy on hall way until 0:00 or so, i could hear clearly their noises.
Wifi is free around the front desk until 7:00pm, but it was so slow because too many people use it.
kitchen and dining room is small. its depends on time but so busy at dinner time.

Cool to have a free breakfast offered, very convient location, staff helpfully let me know where 24/7 free parking was, however was still a 5 minute walk away. However kitchen kind of small and shower had only one temperature available, which for me was lukewarm. Very friendly staff though!

"Free breakfast" is white bread and a bucket of jam. Hardly breakfast. The wifi isn't free, and even when you pay for it, you have to be in the lobby to get service. The crowd here is a party crowd. The whole place feels dirty. The bunks squeak like crazy. The staff is pushy to sell you on experiences, just like all the other info centers in town. Don't stay here unless you absolutely must.

Reason for the 1 star is the staff. As with most bases, the staff couldn't give a care in the world about customer service. They are rude, awful at checking in any more than 0 people at a time and generally miserable. I think the chap who checked us in both times was 'Marius' or something similar - he was grumpy and really rude, basically grunted at me. Just poor really - why are people like this given jobs? It makes your first impression of the hostel a bad one. The rooms are okay in terms of cleanliness, but the bar below pounds out music all night which can be heard clearly on the first and second floors. Kitchen isn't great. A typical Base really. Avoid if at all possible.

The targeted group of Base Backpackers is definitely people who want to go out and party. I think the hostel does a good job in keeping people from disturbing others that want to sleep, but in my opinion that comes with a price. Alcohol and hot food (?) are not allowed in the rooms, probably to keep people from making a mess. It might be effective, but it made me feel like being a teenager again. I'm probably not part of the targeted group, but my honest review is that I wouldn't recommend staying if you're just looking for accommodation.
