This is a mid range brand and some of the gear holds up but other stuff falls apart really quickly. The real problem is that their customer service is very bad. If you want real gear with good service stick to North face, Sherpa, Mountain hardware, or other international brands. If you want cheap stuff then look in the unbranded stores in Thamel.

Good local brand. Tried it on EBC Camp Trek and it proved to be good. The staff were helpful. The prices are good too for a propriety store. They have literally everything from the cheap to the original black diamond brand.
I didn't experience any damage with their clothes or good so far. Highly recommended store if you are looking for something with better quality than the fake brands.

They have both fake and real hiking shoes depending on budget, they are frank about which ate fake. I got good help from the male employee. Sonam is a domestic brand which offers descent quality at a mid-level price.

This Shop looks as it has some real and good quality gear. But be aware of for example shoes. The women tell you that the shoes are not faked and will sell you these "on sale" for 20 or 30%. After a few days the shoes, for example "Salomon", are already broken and you recognize you bought a faked shoe for about 80$. When you go to the shop to complain the staff is very unfriendly and tells you no exchange, no refund. I recommend to avoid that "cheating on tourist shop" at all.

Eines professionellen Geschäfts nicht würdig!

Für den Everest Base Camp Trek und 2 Pässe kaufte ich bei Sonam Gears einige Ausrüstungsgegenstände, unter anderem eine polarisierte Sonnenbrille für meine Frau. Es handelte sich um ein günstiges "China-Modell" für 1.400 Rupees (umgerechnet ca. 14 Euro). Auf Nachfrage meiner Frau, der ein guter UV-Schutz extrem wichtig war, erklärte der Verkäufer, dass die Brille für unsere Zwecke völlig in Ordnung sei.

Leider ging auf dem Trek bereits am 2. Tag der Nutzung die Sonnenbrille kaputt. Der untere Rahmen brach aus heiterem Himmel, als meine Frau die Brille aufziehen wollte, ohne dass sie besondere Kraft angewendet hätte und ohne das die Brille runtergefallen wäre o.ä. Schließlich brach der Rahmen völlig auseinander.

Drei Wochen später, nach dem Trek, gingen wir zu Sonam und reklamierten die Brille. Da kam die böse Überraschung: der Verkäufer im Laden lehnte eine Erstattung ab, da er darüber nicht entscheiden könne. Ein Manager sei wegen der Wahlen im Nepal die nächsten Tage nicht zu erreichen. Nach über einer halben Stunde Diskussion und offenbar waren unserer Beharrlichkeit war der Manager dann doch plötzlich am Telefon.
Der lehnte eine Erstattung ebenfalls ab. Bei "China-Brillen" gebe es keine Erstattung, das sei schon immer so. Nach langem hin und her gab ich es auf und zog frustriert ab..

China-Brille hin oder her, was mich ärgert ist:
1. Sonam verkauft diese Brillen, obwohl der Laden weiß, dass die Brillen gerne brechen. Offenbar waren wir jedenfalls nicht die ersten, was aus dem Gespräch mit dem Manager deutlich hervorging
2. selbst billigere China-Brillen (Ray-Ban fakes etc) brechen nicht einfach so, wenn man sie aufzieht. Und 14 Euro sind so günstig auch nicht..
3. die Behauptung des Managers, Sonam würde alle Kunden darauf hinweisen, dass dies bei billigen (sprich: nicht-Sonam-eigenen) Produkten Risiko des Kunden ist, ist unwahr. Beim Kauf wurde uns ausdrücklich gesagt, die Brille sei ok
4. keine Einsicht und kein Interesse an zufriedenen Kunden. Veräppeln kann ich mich jedenfalls selbst: der Manager muss mir nicht 10x sagen, wie wichtig ihm meine Zufriedenheit ist, wenn er selbst mein Friedensangebot, die Hälfte zu erstatten oder den Preis zu verrechnen (ja, zu diesem Zeitpunkt wollten wir bei Sonam eigentlich noch einkaufen), ablehnt

Fazit: Sonam? Nie wieder
