Regional Agricultural Research Station, Lumle (RARS, Lumle) was founded initially as Lumle Agricultural Training Centre in 1968. It was responsible for the training of retiring personnel from the Gurkha Regiments of the British Army, in improved agricultural technologies, which could be implemented by them on returning to their villages in the hill districts of Nepal. In 1975, funding for the Centre was transferred to the United Kingdom (UK) Government's Overseas Development Administration (ODA), and LAC was given a wider mandate for agricultural research, extension and training, within a command area covering 1,100 km² and about 15,000 farming households in parts of the districts of Kaski, Parbat and Myagdi.
In 1987, LAC was given responsibility to generate the agricultural technologies for additional four hill districts of Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun and Syangja, as part of the then World Bank funded Hill Food Production Project (HFPP). In 1989, LAC became part of the then National Agricultural Research and Services Centre (NARSC), now the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), and was designated as the Regional Agricultural Research Centre (LRARC) for the WDR, with responsibility for technology generation for eight hill districts, the seven given above, plus Baglung District. In 1993, under a NARC reorganization, the Wheat Research Station at Bhairahawa was designated as the Regional Centre, and Lumle reverted to the status of an Agricultural Research Centre, becoming known as Lumle Agricultural Research Centre (LARC). In July 1995, the responsibility for extension activities was handed-over to the Department of Agriculture Development (DoAD), the Department of Livestock Services (DoLS), and the Department of Forestry (DoF). Palpa, Gulmi and Arghakhanchi were added to LARC's Research Command Area which covered 18,500 km2 and 360,000 farming households. In July 1998, LARC was handed over to NARC from the DFID and had been named as Agricultural Research Station (ARS) Lumle. In July 2003, the station has been upgraded to regional status (RARS).
