I met Oneal in 2013, he didn't have a company or an agenda. Oneal was just a nice guy who worked at hostel while he was in school. I kept in touch with him for a couple years, that relationship grew into a really comfortable friendship. I made my way back to Nepal this year without much consideration for what I wanted to do. I knew I didn't want to spend time on the popular trekking routes, but was sort of leaning toward a more exotic route like manaslu or the three pass route to Everest. After a really fun dinner at Or2k, Oneal convinced me that my money would be better spent in the recently decimated langtang range, the hardest hit region by the recent quake. He lost about $500 on that suggestion, that's not something you often experience in KTM. Dude sold me, hooked me up with a really nice guide, that I still talk to, and let me spend 10 days on his family's farm in Ilam, free of charge. I can't gush enough about how good this service is. Oneal's family is every bit as sweet as he is.be warned though, the food is abundant and nearly none-stop. There isn't a whole lot of tourists if you you make it to Ilam, which make the experience really great. If you don't book with him, let him take you to lunch, dude knows the best Newari restaurants in the most quiet corners of Kathmandu. Tell him Jake sent you, try the brain with beaten rice, you only live once guy's.
P.s. Ask about the foxey raksi 😉
Well where do I begin? March 2017 we trekked the forbidden kingdom of Upper Mustang. It had been on my radar for a number of years, and having been good friends with Oneal since 2012 it seemed an obvious choice to use his company. All the complicated logistics were organised in a efficient and timely manner; particularly the return flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and the restricted area permit (definitely worth the fee, see the photos on his webpage).
In all honesty Oneal speaks better English than people I know back home in the UK. Many an evening were spent with him acting as translator, with us asking questions back and forth to the fascinating locals we encounted on the way. Oneal's quick wit and humor adding to the already unforgettable experience.
When trekking in Nepal, setbacks and minor issues are inevitable. Anything that occured, Oneal sorted straight away. After our flight was cancelled by the travel agent for some unknown reason (possibly because of the Nepali New Year), Oneal organised a jeep back to Pokhara in a matter of minutes. Absolute hero. Without this we would have been stranded for a number of days due to the flights being booked up.
If you want UNIQUE tailored made experience, rather than paying a Western company crazy money for a crowded trek, choose Oneal's Backpackers Adventure, and have the trip of a lifetime.
What an amazing 11 days in Nepal!
Oneal really looked after us and took care of everything on our tour around Kathmandu, Pokra and our trek through the mountains starting at Nayapul up to Poon hill and back through Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani. absolutely breathtaking!
We can't wait to go back :)
Thanks again Oneal, we'll be back soon!
I had an incredible experience with Oneals Backpackers Adventure. Not only did I book a Trekking Trip to ABC but also was I introduced to unknown places in the East of Nepal during a Camping trip. I felt absolutely comfortable and I got to know the real Nepali culture. I can fully recommend any Trekking with Oneals Backpackers Adventure.
Oneals got countless ways to have fun in the himalayaS.
