The Annapurna massif is stunning, and the Poon Hill hike very much worth doing, certainly. We, however, were not impressed with the quality of stays, service, or food on our hike with Nepal Wilderness Trekking. We would suggest taking a few hours to secure your own permits and accommodations along the trail (which perhaps a hundred or more people summit each day, so the trail is flush with options).

The hotels along the very well-travelled and easy to navigate path are very basic, and if there are better options, we did not enjoy them through NWT. As our guide Saujan said, all the food along the trail is "the same," so there were no hot tips on best grub (and our guide even brought us back to a restaurant we had specifically said we didn't really like on the way back down, until we insisted on a neighboring spot). We were consistently hiking at a pace faster than the guide because of an unfortunate knee injury a few weeks before, and didn't get much real guiding or knowledge along the way—while he was kind, there were many quiet hours. Our porter, and the owner's son, was unable to help with my husband's bag as suggested would be possible, and instead just carried mine for the two-day incline. On the last day, he hurt his foot, and needed to drive back to the city without us, leaving me to carry my bag down many, many flights of stairs (I'm fully capable, but this was simply not our agreement). At the point the porter's foot was hurt, we were also asked if we 'would we be willing to drive down instead of trek? It would be cheaper from here to get a taxi.' We were asked twice, and it made us feel like our desire to complete the route was completely misunderstood. We both felt uncomfortable with the porter's clear lack of conditioning for such a physically challenging role as well compared to almost all other porters on the trail that we encountered—and his poor foot! Lastly, there were payment transfer issues, which were resolved but not without some discomfort.

Nepal Wilderness Trekking is an entirely decent option if you don't have any time to make arrangements for this extremely popular trek yourself, but my suggestion would be to spend a little time planning on your own, as the Poon Hill route is well developed. We are grateful for the help, but was one of those situations where we felt we could have easily provided ourselves the same quality of trek for much less.

My wife and I did the Poon Hill trek + Ghandruk village in 4 days, and those days are now among the best of our lives. Our guide Riddhi was amazing, he made us feel comfortable the whole trip, always concerned with our well being and adjusting the pace according to our needs. He told us all about the great Himalayan mountains, about Nepalese culture and languages. Besides that, our lodges were top class, with hot shower and incredible food every day. I cannot thank Himal and Riddhi enough for the perfect trip, and I’m already planing when to go back. Nothing but love to you guys, see you again soon!
