Appealing stop off if you are in this area. Not much to see but ok to break a journey, with some nice food outlets, andit’s very Dutch!!

Beautiful fortress with it's typical mud defence walls. The fortress has been rebuild as fortresses were build during 'The Golden Age' period of the Netherlands: typical star-shaped, with a defence waterline (the canals) and a high defence mud wall.

Bourtange is a village were people live, but the small village has transformed into a big open air museum. To access, you have to buy a ticket. Then you have the opportunity to experience 'The Golden Age' in a certain way. A most enjoyable, familyfun trip. Check out the dates in May or June: every year a fictional historical battle is performed.

It's a very nice little fortress. We had a very nice guide that told us everything about the history of the place. There is also an area for playing games: bow and arrow, shooting, throwing the horseshoe, canoeing etc. The guys there are friendly, laid back and fun and they made our experience really special. I'd definitely recommend the place for a fun day out.

Do come on Sunday afternoon where enthusiastic local volunteers dressed up in traditional costumes to reenact the 'merceneries' during the 90 years war. The place is incredibly tiny and you might find yourself exploring the whole town in less than an hour.

Cycled to Bourtange from Papenburg. Amazing "little" 'castle' with a traditional show inside with firearms and canons. Unique experience!

We stopped by this fort on the way back from Copenhagen and Bremen Very well maintained and beautiful fort. I was lucky to get my drone in the air to snap a couple of awesome photos!

Cute little village with plenty picture opportunities. It is very small and not a lot of activities outside the festival season though

Original place. Good choice for not so long trip with children. After walk you can drink or eat something in a restaurant.

Probably a lot nicer in summer. During our visit in February, the majority of shops and restaurants were closed. Bit underwhelming.

Vesting Bourtange breaths history from all pores in this beautiful place. They way everything is restored and the buildings you are allowed to see inside makes this an awesome journey into the history.
