This >650 year old Castle is very well preserved and has a lot of history. Built in the middle ages at the point where 2 main rivers come together, it was also strategically located between 2 areas in near constant war. In addition there were some conflicts between the owner of the castle, and the nobleman living there to keep things in check. Amongst other things these included the illegal charging of toll to passing ships.
Later on the castle was in use as prison keeping political and religious prisoners (and their families), often sentenced to life.
Finally the castle was made part of the Dutch waterline, a wide area of land that would be flooded (on purpose) to prevent foreign armies reaching the big cities. With the invention of airplanes in the 20th century that final use was no longer effective, and now this castle serves as a very nice, nostalgic and educational tourist attraction.
The castle can be visited using a self guided tour with interactive audio and video props in multiple languages (English and Dutch for sure, but more available I think).
Definitely worth a visit!
Fantastic place to visit and great for adults and children. It was for sure one of the highlights of our trip to Netherlands. A boat trip over then ferry ride to Woudrichem then boat back to Gorinchem.
Great castle to see. Quite a but to do and read. Worth the visit but an admission fee of 13 euros is more than I feel is fair. 9 euros per is what I felt it was worth.
Have to pay to go in. Pay to see museum. Closes at 5 but after 4 forget it. Interesting I guess. We sneaked in and took photos
Very impressive castle, with a rich history. There's a comprehensive tour and during weekends and the summer holiday there are extra activities like music and acting.
Great to visit with kids, with lots of running around to do! Also great for castle nerds like myself.
Nice green and historical (650 years) old castle
Nice old castle. Good for a half day visit. Including a small museum
A castle rich in history, and the museum gives a quick crash course of important Dutch events. All printed signs are in both Dutch and English, as well as a few interactive exhibits, but spoken audio is only Dutch.
This museum is extremely child friendly; there's plenty for kids to do, and the volunteers are also excited to involve them in stories and play games.
Due to the stairs and walking, this is likely not suitable for elderly and the disabled.
There's a simple cafetaria, but with decent food and coffee. It's possible to book a fancy room here for a "romantic weekend getaway"; check the site for details.
Interesting place to visit. Historical place. They also have guided tour through the castle but you can also roam the castle on your own.
From time to time they organise events like historical battles.
This is a great place! We spend a full day here and had a wonderful time. Very nice staff, nice store, very educational. You need to walk distances and climb some steep stairs inside the castle. If you take the audio tour you will learn a lot. Nice tour for kids, very interactive, without making it too childish, so great for adults too.
