Anno 2013, the terms democracy and legitimacy are two highly contested concepts within the European Union. How democratic is the European Union? And are the values of the European Union based on legitimate principles? What does reality within Europe show us in relation to the values the European Union holds? Based on these questions, this conference will cover subjects like the power of European institutions, cultural diversity within Europe, the economic crisis and the EU and the role of media and ethnic minorities on the European continent.
The purpose of the two-day conference is to stimulate European citizenship under young people. Through organising lectures, training sessions and other activities, we hope to offer participants a broad insight into the European Union and the challenges that it faces when it comes to democracy and legitimacy. We will bring together students, young professionals and experts from different backgrounds and in this way stimulate discussion and debate on an academic level. The conference is facilitated by the European Commission’s Youth in Action programme and we work in close cooperation with Clingendael, the Netherlands Institute of International Relations.
