European Conference on Politics & Gender (ECPG) in Amsterdam: Call for local panels and roundtables

The Amsterdam Research Centre for Gender & Sexuality (ARC-GS) is the proud local organizer of the European Conference on Politics & Gender (ECPG), 4-6 July 2019. ECPG conceives gender and politics broadly to include any gender, sexuality and intersectional perspectives in political science, international relations, political theory and philosophy, research methods, public policy and public administration, and social movements.
ECPG particularly welcomes the participation of early-career scholars and scholars who are underrepresented in the profession.
To showcase the rich research and contemporary questions on politics and gender in the Netherlands, ARC-GS will sponsor a number of local panels and roundtables at the ECPG. ARC-GS welcomes proposals from across the field of gender and politics. Panels may address local questions in a local or comparative context. The Children of Harvey Milk: How LGBTQ Politicians Changed the World
Andrew Reynolds (Professor of Political Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
The gay rights movement has achieved social transformation at a dizzying pace, upending conventional views on sex, love, marriage, the family, and equality itself. While most scholars understand the movement as a broad-based social movement, Andrew Reynolds argues that the most important catalyst of gay rights is often overlooked: individuals.
Openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender politicians had a critical role in bringing about a more positive attitude towards homosexuality and gender identity, both among other politicians and the general public. Based on in-depth interviews with more than one hundred elected officials and high profile political candidates, Reynolds traces major breakthroughs for the gay rights movement through the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender politicians who advanced the cause. His forthcoming book documents their successes and failures, heartwarming stories of acceptance and heartbreaking stories of ostracism, demonstrating the ways in which an individual can change the views and voting behaviors of those around him. Reynolds also includes rare vignettes of LGBT leaders in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean who continue to fight for gay rights in spite of threats, violence, and homophobia.
Andrew Reynolds is a Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He founded and directs the UNC LGBTQ Representation and Rights Research Initiative, the leading global think tank focused on LGBTQ politics. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, New Statesman, and widely online. His twelve non-fiction books range from African politics to the Arab Spring, elections to the future of democracy. Nice to Meet You An introduction to gender and sexuality at the FMG
How are gender-neutral toilets, headscarf debates, working mothers, lipstick lesbians, sexual intimidation at festivals, Trump, underrepresentation of women in political leadership, Gay Pride, and more, interrelated, or not?
Nice to meet you: we are professors focusing on gender & sexuality at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (in the departments of anthropology, GPIO, political science and sociology), and we will present you with short pitches that show why gender & sexuality is not only interesting, relevant and important to understand our society, other cultures, and ourselves, but also why it is one of the most inspiring themes in the social sciences.

Enthousiaste en zelfstandige stagiair(e) gezocht!
Het Servicepunt Emancipatie (SPE) ondersteunt de vrouwenorganisaties en emancipatieinitiatieven van Amsterdam in opdracht van de gemeente. Dat doen wij o.a. door het organiseren van netwerkbijeenkomsten en het verdelen van speerpuntbudgetten. Ook helpen wij organisaties bij het opzetten van projecten. Daarnaast brengt het SPE in kaart wat de diverse organisaties in de stad doen, haalt relevante informatie op en koppelt dit terug aan de gemeente Amsterdam. Als stagiair bij het SPE ondersteun je het team bij diverse taken, maar krijg je ook veel eigen verantwoordelijkheid en heb je bovendien ruimte om invulling te geven aan een eigen deelproject.

Interviews with Dutch young adults
American college students studying in Amsterdam for the summer each have to interview one Dutch young adult, 18-30 for a class project. The interview will be about growing up in the Netherlands with some questions about families and gender. The interview will take 30 to 45 minutes, and can be done in any public place of your choosing.
