Tronquera is a very small community about a 45 minute drive south of Waspan, and the Rio Coco. It was a booming city before the civil war in 1980. It's economy was driven by a turpentine factory and the only remains are the cement foundations of some of the buildings. The airstrip is still used by AWA, a Christian organization that does flights for sick and injured people to the hospital in Puerto Cabazes that would otherwise take up to days to drive in a vehicle.
