The living mountains make our lives happier, especially being closer to them. As montanhas vivas tornam nossas vidas mais felizes, especialmente estando mais perto delas.

    HOBA METEORITE

This meteorite, the largest known in the world, was discovered by Jacobus Harmanus Brits in 1920. It was declared a national monument on 15 March 1955 with permission of the farm-owner at that time, Mrs. O. Scheel. This declaration was extended in 1979 with the approval of Mr. J. Jooste, then owner of the farm. Mr. J. Engelbrecht, the present owner, donated the area surrounding the meteorite for the development of the site (1987). The Hoba meteorite weighs approximately 50 ton and is almost 3 m long and up to 1 m thick. According to scientific calculations, the meteorite struck the earth 80 000 years ago. The meteorite consists of approximately 82,4 per cent iron, 16,4 per cent nickel and 0,76 per cent cobalt. Other trace elements contained are carbon, sulphur, chromium, copper, zinc, gallium, germanium and iridium. Scientifically, it is termed an ataxite high in nickel content. Come embrace the Hoba meteorite in beautiful Namibia!
