Maputo International Airport (IATA: MPM, ICAO: FQMA), also known as Lourenço Marques Airport or Mavalane International Airport, is an airport located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) northwest of the center of Maputo, the largest city and capital of Mozambique. It is the largest airport in Mozambique, and hub for LAM Mozambique Airlines and Kaya Airlines. Most destinations served from the airport are in Africa but TAP Portugal operates a service to Lisbon, Portugal, Turkish Airlinesoperates flights to Istanbul, and Qatar Airwaysoperates flights to Doha.

Expansion
China's Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company has built a new cargo terminal, in what was the starting point of the first phase of a Chinese financed expansion project, with an initial estimated cost of US$75 million.The first phase concluded with the opening of the new international terminal on 15 November 2010. The new terminal has a capacity of 900,000 passengers a year, far from the 60,000 it could hold before. Originally, this modernization project had in mind to benefit from the 2010 FIFA World Cupheld in neighbouring South Africa, but it could not be finished in time. It was, however, ready for the All Africa Games which were held in Maputo in 2011. The project experienced a serious cost overrun, with the builder requesting an additional US$40 to 50 million to complete the work.
The second phase entailed the construction of a new domestic terminal where the old terminal stood. The whole plan is for Maputo International Airport to double its capacity from 450,000 to 900,000 per year and help expand tourism in the city and country. The terminal will also have 14 check-in counters, electronic panels displaying flights, a presidential VIP lounge, escalators and an electric central cooling system. Recently travelled to Maputo from South Africa and back again so did not require a visa, airport is cosy and easy to navigate. Sat at some cafe sipping on 2M beer while waiting for my plane, my only problem was the baggage handler, doesn't seem like you have a choice to push your own trolley there and after he pushed my luggage literally from the door to the chechin counter (which is around 20 meters) he wanted a crapload of money, I could have pushed my own trolley around the airport with no problem but seems like it's their way of creating employment. Paid him R100 which is around 500 MZN

Simple and Small airport where Bandits are dressed in uniforms of security and Immigration staff ! They will organize some games like spot your bag,Pick your bag ,Take your bag etc !!

[1] The visa counter staff are awful and extremely inefficient. Besides, after the government officially introduced the arrival visa facility, the staff are not yet aware of it and still demanded pre-arranged documents. That's not what people call "visa on arrival".
[2] The security check point staff are disgusting. They always take the passport away and beg for money.
[3] The departure lounge is designed for premium passengers such as star alliance gold. However, the receptionist was not aware of that and tried to take only business class passengers. It took a while for her to finally understand it.
[4] When a LAM domestic flight was hugely delayed, the ground staff were not aware that it's their fault, and failed to give passengers a bit of help.
Overall, staff capacity is terribly limited, as compared to other capital airports in sub-Saharan Africa.response / report this review -

Horrible AirPort. They went through all our luggage and stole many things out of them, valuable and even invaluable things. The suitcases were locked but they still managed to open them. We were flying with LAM airlines and they said it is not their staff but the staff from the airport that handles the luggage. Please be very weary here, highly corrupted.

Um dos piores aeroportos do mundo! pessoal não qualificado! tinha bilhete de comprar mais, mesmo que eu tinha um válido! porque seria supostamente expirado !!! policial muito corrupto! emigrar difÃcil porque todo mundo quer ainda tem dinheiro! meus laptops foram roubados de minha bagagem em pessoa! a própria companhia aérea é Standart Africano! não é mau! mas equipe, e principalmente Alfandega são muito koruppt! mas isto é acima do nÃvel do mar! transições transversais a todos!
One of the worst airports in the world! Unqualified staff! Had to buy ticket, although I had a valid! Because it supposedly expired! Police very corrupt! Difficult to leave because everyone still wants money! I personally laptops stolen from my luggage! The airline itself is African standard! not bad! But personal, as well as especially inches are very diced! But this is everywhere! At any border!

The airport building is quite old, but it was clean and functional. Although we arrived as a large group of international delegates for a major international conference, there was a hang-up at immigration as the local officers exerted control and a few delegates had issues with their visas and documents. This caused the entire group to wait in line for a long time. Not many shops and dining options. Overall the airport is just OK hence the 3 star rating from me.

Not a bad airport. Make sure you have a visa before arriving in the country as obtaining one at the airport is not as easy as it should be.

The airport has been newly upgraded, new domestic and international terminal. Clean, easy to navigate. Small compared to other airports and not a lot of shops. Overrall it is a nice airport. Beware of the guys trying to help you push your bags. They will ask for a lot of money.
