PLEASE BEWARE OF ISLE OF MOZAMBIQUE POLICE !!
Visited Isle of Mozambique 4/4/18 - 4/7/18
I was detained , harassed and eventually EXTORTED by members of the Isle of Mozambique police department for making a "illegal" turn in my rented SUV !
Instead of informing me that I made improper turn to park my vehicle (as you should do for any tourist that does not speak the language or is not familiar with local traffic rules) I was detained and asked for money !
I was asked to pay police 10,000 Meticals the equivalent to about $165 USD to be released from their custody . This was a very scary situation I was threatened force when I refused to accompany these officers to local station house !
Situation was eventually resolved after 4 hours with me paying 1,200 Meticals (the equivalent of about $18 USD) for making wrong turn to park my vehicle .
Please keep in mind it was my first day at Isle of Mozambique and was treated is such a fashion .
Corruption is MAJOR problem here BEWARE !!!response / report this review -

Great place to visit, the island is small but has a great mix of places to stay, restaurants, sandy beaches and hundreds of historic buildings to check out.

It has got nice beaches. Colonel architecture. It's a beautiful historical place. A good place to visit in the northern part of Mozambique.
