Inhaca is a place where you go fishing. If you are looking for a quiet relaxed beach holiday then, I am afraid, this is not the place for you. The beaches and the sea on the Maputo side of the island are dirty. Add to the shallow water trillions of spiky roots from the mangrove forest sticking out of the sand and you can understand why nobody is swimming. Also be careful for broken glass and all types of biting insects. Snorkeling can only be done at one place on the island: about 12 Km away and it is only accessible by 4x4 (R600 for the taxi). If you want to swim in a clean sea, you need to drive in a 4x4 for about 8 Km to the other side of the island (R500 for the taxi). The beaches are cleaner there but we still found them littered with tiny pieces of plastic. The type of pollution that kills many sea creatures. The accommodation was basic. We stayed in a wooden chalet that was OK, though some of the other units at the lodge looked more like the Zozo huts you see in people’s gardens. Sleeping at times was difficult because of the doof doof music that came blaring out of the bar of the camp till the early hours of the morning. The other thing that was disappointing was the 1 hr ferry cost from Maputo to Inhaca and back : R6000 ! Add to that a ticket from JHB to Maputo of R8000 per person and all the taxi fares just to go swimming and you are paying as much as for a 4 star beach hotel in Seychelles or Mauritius where frankly the quality of everything is a lot better. I can see now why the Pestana hotel (the only hotel on the island) closed down a few years ago and is now a dilapidated building. The islanders and Marthinus (the manager of the camp) , are all very nice people and the absence of crime on the island was very refreshing. Otherwise the only taxi driver that could take us from the harbour in Maputo to the airport was intoxicated and my partner’s luggage was broken into and some items stolen after we checked in at the airport in Maputo but that is of course routine stuff, not worth mentioning.
