Salt is the mother of all kitchen condiments, and also one of the most easily available. But we are not talking about the 'killer salt' like iodized, chemically laced table salt or even the sea salt (which is considered a slightly better alternative) but with all the pollution and toxic waste dumped into the sea, the sea salt has now lost its lustre. We are talking about Borneo's best kept secret, the Tucu Salt from Ba'kelalan.
To find out more about where TUCU Salt comes from, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ba'kelalan
Tucu Salt comes with a tint of greyish hue, and is harvested in small batches by the womenfolk from collected mountain spring water. The water is boiled over wood fire containers in 6-8 hour shifts and the salt deposits are finally collected.
Every packet of TUCU Salt contributes to the uplifting of livelihood of the native villages in the remote mountains of Ba'Kelalan. Best of all, you are eating 'good salt' that loves you back!
Tucu Salt comes in 9 artisan flavors, such as Au-natural Tucu Salt, Sarawak cracked pepper, kaffir lime, turmeric, roasted garlic, coriander seeds, basil leaves, lemongrass and ginger.
