In 1984 the Federation of Selangor Chinese Association initiated the 1st National Chinese Cultural Festival. The flag of the Cultural Festival was hoisted in March that year in the Assembly Hall to commemorate the Cultural Festival held in Malacca. The San Poh Hill in Malacca was chosen for the igniting of the Sacred Torch of the Cultural Festival every year because it was in the Ming Dynasty in the 16th Century, the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho with his fleet landed in Malacca to establish relationship with the Malacca Kingdom. Therefore, Malacca is reputed to be the earliest place where the Chinese landed. The Federation of Malaysian Chinese Association was officially registered on the 13th December 1991 and from then onward the Chinese Cultural Festival is sponsored by the Federation, and the hosting is rotated among the 13 states. In the 10th Cultural Festival in Kedah in 1993, the name was changed to "National Chinese Cultural Festival" to signify the continuation of National Chinese Cultural traditions. The Cultural Torch was transferred across South China Sea to Sabah for the first time on 27th November 1995 as it was our turn to organize. YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was the Guest of Honour to officiate the grand opening in Kota Kinabalu. After 16 years, the Cultural Torch is coming back again, and we have the honour to invite our YAB Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak to officiate the Grand Opening Ceremony in November.
