A BIT OF BACKGROUND TO NAAD SREEVIJAYAM.
Naad Sreevijayam Society was inspired by a very special person Sri Thamarakudy KR Vijayakumar from Kerala who on the invitation of Swami Shantanand Saraswathi, invited him to teach Mridangam & Ganjira (both South Indian drums) in Temple of Fine Arts. There was no limit to his devotion to Swamiji and so began 26 years of selfless service and sacrifice finally returning to his family on 17th September 2016.
Master KR Vijayakumar is a highly qualified brilliant world class Musician and Guru who has performed with many world famous musicians who loved when he accompanied them, because of not only his incredible, diverse and intuitive skills as a musician but also his humility, and easy going manner. Ego is nowhere to be found in him as he supports, encourages and teaches with all his heart.
Naad Sreevijayam was set up by one very grateful student , whom he inspired and helped in so many ways. She had suffered all her life with depression and Bipolar Disorder for which she never received any treatment but survived the dark times through reaching out to others and helping them. It was Master KR Vijayakumar who while teaching her Mridangam and Ganjira noticed her falling apart and got help for her.
The greatest help through her depression came through her passion for Indian music - starting with Tabla (a North Indian), which she took up at age 47 after being inspired an incredibly gifted world class Tabla player Sri Vickneswaran Ramakrishnan (Master Vicky), who is part of "Akasha Malaysia" who became her Tabla Guru to this day. This started her journey into Indian music which then also progressed to Ganjira at age 50 and Mridangam at age 52 under Sri Thamarakudy KR Vijayakumar.
Drumming was able to break through the darkness and became like a type of meditation and the best medicine. It was expression, deeply spiritual and a life-line she never expected. Her condition is genetically inherited and although she had sought early intervention for those of her children who are effected which ultimately saved their lives, (having observed the same symptoms in some of them from pre-kindergarten age), she had never sought treatment for herself. It was only through Master KR Vijayakumars insistance that she actually came to get the help she desperately needed who actually accompanied her to her appointments.
This was not the first time that he has, through his compassion and humility gone the extra mile for a student and others who were not even his students, which she had witnessed first hand. He had suffered incredibly in his own life with health issues which were life threatening; tragedies and hardships yet, he was always thinking of others before himself, just giving cheerfully and never expecting anything in return. He would always say "just do what you can" He is a true humanitarian.
Master KR Vijayakumar has impacted so many lives in a very positive way, leading always by example so passionate and dedicated and a perfectionist in everything he did. After he returned to Kerala in 2016 permanently to be with his family, this student & 2 others visited him and stayed with him, his wife, Sathee Bai and son Krishnadev for 3 weeks and learning not only Mridangam but became part of their family, learning cooking and joining in everyday life there. They live a very simple life on the outskirts of Kerala in Kolam District which is at the edge of a jungle and so incredibly peaceful, welcoming and spiritual. His house named after him is called Sree Vijayam. Overwhelmed by the whole experience and the positive vibrations not only from Master and his music but his family, the sounds, smells and an immense sense of gratitude knowing that he had left all this for so many years to teach us in Malaysia, that I appreciated and knew the value and blessing of what I had received and wanted his legacy to live on. For more people to experience and be helped through Music and the many life lessons I had learnt from Master. I am that very grateful student and "Naad Sreevijayam" is captures the positive vibrations of Master and his family that I experienced with them in Kerala.
I became aware that Music can reach people where language cannot as is the case for many people such as those suffering from Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsey, Blindness, Deafness and many many more including Depression and other psychiatric illnesses.
Through hearing, feeling and expression of Music & the arts, people of all ages can find happiness, peace and freedom. Freedom from physical and mental limitations, freedom from social stigmas or labels given by society for anything or anybody who is different. Time has come to change all that. There is no discrimination in Music. All barriers are broken down and differences co-exist perfectly as melody is made more beautiful when different harmonies are added.
This is in appreciation and gratitude to a Guru, my Guru, Master KR Vijayakumar who, though small in stature has lead by example with a huge smile and a sincere and humble heart and whose lessons will live on through Naad Sreevijayam Society whose motto is "Come in to Learn, Go out to Serve".
BLESSED FROM THE START.
