My parents live in Penang & I have legally obtained social visas here before and am friendly with staff. After submitting all the legal documentation - I was forced into being locked in a room with an aggressive, slanderous and unstable consulate - do not go there. The counters have all been turned into into interrogation rooms for Westerners. This meglomaniac man does not want foreigners in Indonesia.

Everytime I was here in the morning, I was ask to come back after 3pm. Feel like they only start working at 3pm. Was told document will be ready by Friday, came here at 10am and was told to come back at 3pm.

One of the officer willing to help up and passed the document before 12pm.

Update for anyone interested in avoiding KL/Singapore; I got a social, 60-day visa within a day (next day afternoon). Don't know if it's going to work for everyone, but probably worth a go. I had no issues & don't know if there is a quota like I've read elsewhere. Bring your sponsor letter & any necessary documents, passport, a photo of you and enough cash to pay the visa.

Enjoy the food in Penang :)

You are No longer able to get a 2x month visa here, applications are to be made online via an Indonesian Sponsor, with effect from 19th Dec 2017!!!
I used to go here every year, as it was such a simple process, but this is no longer the case :(

If you wanted to do renew indonesia passport. Usually you cant take it on the same day no matter u reach it warly 9am or later. Need to wait up to 1 or 2 days. At least the aircond is cold enough for the long wait which not pissed you up much.

Unfortunately this is no longer a good place to get a tourist visa, after all the time and effort, did exactly what was requested and got rejected. KL is no better for visas.

Save the hassle and stress and go to Thailand instead, its less hassle, more affordable and just as beautiful.

Tried to get a 60 day visa for Indonesia. Was told Penang was easy. Applied and paid and was told to come back the next day. Came back and was told they could not issue a 60 day visa.. I would have to go to Indonesia and get a 30 day and extend it.. I saw other Europeans at the counter being told the same. Some even applied for the sponsored visa and got rejected. right pain.. submitted all required docs - photo, passport, copy of passport, visa form, flights in and out of the Indonesia.. got a refund on the money paid, so worth a try if you are in the area.. but don't go out of your way like we did..

Very lovely and helpful people here. To get a visa you have to apply from 9 till 12 or 1pm, not sure. And get the next day 2pm till 4pm. The guy right side after the entrance door will give you a form and tell the list of the documents. Also he gives an electronic queue number. They have a free wifi sign, I didn't try it though.

Good for Europeans to get their 60-day visa. Very fast (one day) if your documents are in order. Once you get inside you have to find out on your own how to do it though. Go to counter 5 (if I remember correctly) and ask for the visa form. Fill it out, hand it back and wait for your number to appear on the screen. If everything is okay, you pay and come back the day after to pick it up. Come before 12, around 10 to be safe. Good luck ;-)
