  Do we need to clean our ear🤔? Is Earwax dirty?

  #Earwax and ear cleaning 👂is 2 common things many people misunderstood. Many people assume it has to be removed as often as possible because it will clog up our ear canal. I am sure many of us has done that since we were young by our parents at home. Is it really necessary? If so then what is the correct way to remove our ear wax?

  -----Is having Earwax good? -----

  Earwax has many benefits. Our ear canal wall is very fragile and sensitive. Earwax serves as a coating for our ear canal, protecting it from physical damage for example when insect or water got into your ear. More importantly, it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It gives an acidic environment to our ear canal where harmful bacteria difficult to survive.

  -----Why is it so dangerous to remove it by yourself?-----

  Most of the people will use cotton bud, it is too big for our ear canal, it always pushes earwax further in instead of taking it out. If you are unlucky, earwax will stick onto your eardrum (tympanic membrane), and this will cause even more pain😫 and injury the next time you remove it, especially when it gets harden. Second most common tool used at home is metal curette (like a spoon), it is too sharp and it will hurt your ear canal wall if you scrap too often, if the earwax is too dry and hard it might even cause bleeding. Not to mention, doing it blindly without proper visualization🧐 can risk puncturing your ear drum.

  -----When should I see a doctor to remove it?-----

  Earwax naturally moves from deep in the ear canal to the outer ear, dries up and falls out in most cases. In some cases, it got stuck at times if too much build up and cause a blockage, we call it Impacted Ear Wax. If this happens, you will have hearing loss and or ear pain. ONLY during this time you need to remove it, not by yourself, but by a qualified person like Doctor or Audiologist. We would use syringe or suction to remove it safely.

  挖耳朵有必要吗🤔？

  很多人误解耳垢或俗称“耳屎”和挖耳朵👂这两件事。大家都认为必须常常清理耳朵，不然耳屎会堵塞我们的耳道。我相信我们很多人都在家里尝试自己挖耳朵过。但是耳屎真的有必要去除吗？那么去除耳屎的正确方法又是什么呢？

  ----“耳屎”的误会----

  其实很多人不晓得耳屎有很多好处的。我们的耳道的皮是非常脆弱和敏感。耳屎可作为我们耳道的保护层，保护耳道受到伤害，例如当昆虫或水进入您的耳朵时。更重要的是，耳屎本身具有抗细菌和抗真菌的特性。它使我们的耳道处于酸性环境，让有害细菌难以滋生繁殖。

  ----在家里自己来，是很危险的！----

  大多数人会使用棉花棒自己挖或互相挖，其实与耳道狭窄的空间相比，棉花棒有时候相对会比较大，所以它不但不能有效的取出耳屎，而且会把耳屎越推越深。如果倒霉的话，耳垢会粘在你的耳膜上，引起更多的疼痛和伤害😫，特别是当它变干硬时。 第二种最常用的工具是金属刮匙（如勺子），它太尖锐，如果你太用力一不小心会出意外，伤到你的耳道壁，如果耳垢太干或硬，甚至可能导致出血。 最重要的是，在没有清楚的看到耳膜和耳道的情况下🧐 ，盲目地挖耳朵很可能会伤到或刺破你的耳膜。

  ----那我应该什么时候去看医生呢？----

  在多数的情况下，耳屎会自然地从耳道深处慢慢移动到外耳，然后干掉并脱落。有时候如果分泌太多累计太快会导致堵塞卡住，我们称之为Impacted Ear Wax。如果发生这种情况，你会听不清楚，有时还耳痛。 只有在这此时，耳道清理是必要的，而且是由医生或听力学家(Audiologist)等合格的人员帮你。我们会使用抽吸方式将耳屎取出。

  Recently there is an outbreak of measles in Japan and Taiwan, if you are travelling to these countries, please seek medical treatment if you develop symtoms of :

  Fever Sorethroat... Eye redness Cough Running nose Rash

  Best is to get vaccinated if vaccination status is unknown when you are entering high risk area.
