PROFILE
Srimathi Sujatha Kumar, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Govindan Nair of Kulim, Kedah was induced into the real of Bharatha Natyam at the age of eight. Her early tutelage was under Guru Nattuvanar Thilagam Guru Indira Manickam, Kajang, later she continued with Guru Gowri from Kelang Lama, Kulim. In 1994,her enthusiasm and love for this art motivated her to pursue a Degree course at Kalakshetra, the world renowned Indian Institution of Performing Arts in Chenai, India. She went through rigorous and extensive training trained by brilliant Gurus. Her performances were widely acclaimed and brought her many laurels.
Wishing to further her horizons and to promote aspiring artists, she established Kala Mandhir Dance Academy better known as the ‘KMDA’ in 1994. Beginning with a handful of students, KMDA soon grew rapidly in strength and eminence and is reckoned as a premier dance institution in Malaysia. Today, the school has more than 200 students and has graduated 38 students who have completed their arangetram respectively.
Ms Tatcani Nadesan is the second daughter of Mr and Mrs Nadesan Nagamah. She is the dance teacher, choreographer and graduate from KMDA under the tutelage of Guru Sujatha Kumar.
She is one of the brilliant and innovative dance teacher in Barathnatyam in Malaysia. She is also a very energetic and naturally capable dancer in this line.
Her involvement and interest in this art of dance begins at her age of 7.
Due to her interest she started learning Barathayatnam under Guru Senthamarai at Kelang Lama , Kulim, Kedah.
Thereafter she pursued in learning dance under Guru Sujatha Kumar the founder, Director and Advisor of KMDA. Due to her hard work, dedication and passion she completed her Arangetram in 2012.
In achieving her dream as a dance teacher, she was appointed by KMDA and currently successfully teaching dance to the younger generation in KMDA branches under guidance of Guru Sujatha Kumar.
KMDA is an organization created to preserve South Indian Arts and Culture. The main goal is to preserve, nurture and promote art and culture in line with the dream of creating a society that is aware of its cultural heritage. Classes are conducted in the Indian Classical dance styles of Barathanatyam as well as folk dances. The dance is taught by a dedicated and experience teacher none the other the Founder-Director of KMDA itself Guru Srimathi Sujatha Kumar.
KMDA dance programs are classical and semi-classical in nature. In keeping with changing faces of Malaysian society and culture, she combines Indian art with that of other multicultural performing arts.
Originally, the Academy coached students in the city of Kulim at Paya Besar Lakshmi Dhyana Ashramam, and due to demand, slowly expanded to Sera Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Kelang Lama, Kota Kenari, Taman Selasih, Taman Putra Kelang Lama, Wellesly Mariamman Temple Lunas, Merah Estate Mariamman Temple and Sri Raghavendra Center Butterworth.
As an artists who had been contributing to the society she was honoured with the title “Swarasangeetha Natyamani” by ‘Sapthaswara Sangeethalaya’, Ipoh, Perak on 20th June 2010 during the function of ‘Paattum Bharathamum’ which was held at Dewan Serbaguna Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan, Ipoh, Perak. Launch a CD releasing on Paattum Bharathamum where KMDA dance songs were selected as one of the item.
KMDA is also collaborated with Sadir Dance Academy in Chennai,India and Nartaki Dance Academy in Perth, Australia.These two Academies are established by KMDA’s ex-graduates.During major festivals, students from KMDA are invited to do performance.KMDA is also a member of Malaysian Bharathanatyam Association.
The success of staging many performances locally, spurred Srimathi Sujatha Kumar to confidently plan her first dance tour of India, to bring her students for dance in the land where Bharathanatyam originated in 2010,2012 AND 2013.
