The establishment of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies (DSEAS) in 1975 can be seen as a response to one of the objectives of the 1967 ASEAN Declaration, namely to promote Southeast Asian studies. The Department is the only one in Malaysia offering undergraduate and graduate programs in Southeast Asian studies.
The department comprises experts in a wide range of areas, namely, politics and international affairs in Southeast Asia, labour and economy in Southeast Asia, minorities and political conflict in Southeast Asia, migration, maritime economy, fisheries and agricultural issues in Southeast Asia, culture and performing arts in Southeast Asia, ASEAN and Regionalism in Southeast Asia as well as all the major Southeast Asian languages.
