Favorite restaurant during my 3-day trip in Mexico City. There can be a bit wait during peak hour, but the restaurant is huge with a few floors so the wait shouldn't be too long.
I came back twice and loved everything I tried. From hot chocolate, morning pastry, to steak, ant roes. Try the ant roes (escamoles) if you are a culinary adventurer. It's stir fried in butter and comes with corn tortillas. Taste is mild and smooth, and price is quite reasonable considering it's regarded as a delicacy.

The food is really tasty and some milk related products are made from their own farms like "nata". Ingredients felt fresh and premium quality. I had a "Chocolatin" which is like a Croissant and it was superb. Service was premium. Fair price.

The nata was great and so was the orange juice but in my opinion everything else average.

They charged us for hot chocolate and for bread that we thought was complimentary.

The wait is pretty nuts 30min to an hour but that’s typical. I wouldn’t come back unless it was just for the nata.

The food is definitely the best in Mexico City. It's an amazing breakfast and the hot chocolate is to die for. Because of the restaurant's fame the crowds do make it a bit unbearable as well as the guaranteed 1 hour wait time. If you can I recommend swinging by, putting your name down, then coming back. The food and service does move fast so it's not bad once you're seated, just be prepared to take a while to get a seat.

Could easily get twice the price for the professional service and superb renditions of recognizable Mexican dishes. Superior ingredients, beautiful presentation and incredible sauces. (Hot chocolate not to be missed)

You'll have to wait, it's worth it.

Classic breakfast spot in a beautiful old building. The staff are friendly and in mexican style, in no rush. Fresh dough being pulled on the second floor bakery infront of us. Expect to wait 15-30mins for a seat at rush hour. Still casual dining, fresh juice, the food was good, but nothing blew my skirt up. This was a lovely stop for a bite to eat.

Excellent place for a nice breakfast or brunch. Breads, pastries, hot chocolate and service were all outstanding, as were the main dishes. Bring your appetite!

Check the hours. We had a very nice meal here. A family invited me and it is a very nice place. Good Mexican food, and pleasant atmosphere. Close to the historic center.

Best spot for Mexican style brunch. Multiple dining rooms in a historic building, just two blocks from the Zocolo. Professional and attentive service. Brung begins with a selection from a bread and pastry basket and a glass of warm Mexican style chocolate. The two mains we had and the freshly squeezed juices were delicious. Highly recommended.

By far some of the best food and service I've had.. everything is extremely fresh and made to order, the bread is also made in house as most thing here are.. my taste bud are overwhelmingly happy and my stomach happy as can be.. I highly recommend this place.

A required visit! Lunch is the best time to go (expect a wait), and expect to enjoy both fantastic traditional Mexican cooking and a historic setting. I've been to many of the better-known "traditional" kitchens in Mexico City, and this one is my favorite.

We stayed nearby at Gran Hotel so we ate breakfast here everyday for 5 days.

The hot chocolate is made with crack or heroin or something because I was waking up in the middle of the night with cold sweats wanting to run there and drink it.

The bread basket that they offer you has good variety of croissants and Mexican sweet breads.

The omelettes are incredibly fluffy and come with a variety of preparations. I had the Oaxacan style and it came with mole poblano, which I loved. They have damn good coffee too.

The service is friendly, prompt, attentive and efficient. And the prices are very reasonable.

We didn't go to the other locations but this one is highly recommended.

Loved breakfast!

A tray of pastries was brought to our table even before our waiter stopped by. With that and their delicious hot chocolate, it was easy to wait for our egg dishes in this popular and fully packed restaurant.

Great food and service for a reasonable price. Highly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at El Cardinal. For an appetizer we selected the any eggs and abalone ceviche. We were not disappointed. The any eggs was, by far, one of the best bites of food I've ever eaten. The staff was also attentive and quick. Should I find myself in la Ciudad de Mexico again, I'll be visiting El Cardenal.

I have eaten octopus in many countries and only once have I eaten one as good as the one I had here. The service was top-notch and the prices were very reasonable, but it was really the food that made this place stand out. Amazing restaurant, probably my favorite of all restaurants I visited in Mexico City.
