Nice place but very far away, the route to get there is very complicated, an off-road car is required (sedans go up but it is difficult to go up in compact cars). Preferably travel in December or January so that the daughters are in their reddish paint

Maple Grove might be a more appropriate name. We went in rainy season and needed to walk the last 20 mins to the entrance because of the mud ruts were too deep for our lower clearance SUV. Upon entering, the path is over grown and in disrepair with what looks like a stream running through many portions of out depending on the rain. The walk from the entrance is quick, maybe 10 mins. The grove has a few maple trees in it's densely vegetative microclimate and as you walk back out, you return up to the drier pine forest. We hated the trek in and out but now laugh the next day despite almost driving off the road. You need a vehicle with truck clearance and might opt for 4*4 during the rainy season.

This is a very unique place. Its a bit hard to reach off of a long and winding road. When you do finally reach the path it is a good hike through the forest to reach the maple trees, but it is worth it! Please be gentle on the plants and don't pick anything or dig anything up as this is a delicate and unique ecosystem. Be sure to pack out all your trash. Take pictures, but don't touch.

Maple forest ( "maple , " Acer saccharum ssp. Skutchii, family Sapindaceae) is an ecosystem that is located in the temperate and humid mountains of Talpa de Allende, Jalisco, Mexico. Maples share their habitat with other trees of tropical origin and boreal (oaks, magnolias, etc.). Together they make up a forest of high diversity and unique floristic composition. The vegetation of this site is known as cloud forest or cloud forest.
The existence of maple forest in Talpa de Allende was first recognized in 2000, when the discovery is published in the Bulletin of the Institute of Botany of the University of Guadalajara. Since its discovery has sought protection through the creation of a biosphere reserve in the area and as a state park. The maple is included in the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM-059-ECOL-2001) for protection.
The presence in Talpa de Allende sugar maple is the result of cold climates that existed in Mexico during the Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene) and Pleistocene. Cold temperatures during those geological periods produced migrations of species typical of northern America to the south, resulting in the expansion of its ranks and in the establishment of these species in Mexico and Central America.
