  There is a famous roadblock just before the bridge as you are heading for Blantyre. All vehicles including buses have to stop and searched by the police. A very effective roadblock.

  This is the old dirt road route from Blantyre to Lilongwe. The village Zalewa is not at this bridge, Zalewa is situated on the new M1 at the Kamuzu Bridge which crosses the River Shire about 4 kms south west. Zalewa is becoming a busy little town with a new rail line being built close by and local and international traffic moving through. The Shire is a beautiful all year river and gives hydro power to Malawi.
