It was a smooth process though it took us two hours to finish with clearing the car, the boarder officials were helpful and did their job.

Since I crossed the border via public transport, I first had to walk a good 30mins to the border from the bus stop as public vehicles aren't allowed which is fair enough and understandable. You can also chose to take a motorbike taxi if you don't want to walk.
At the border there is an ATM machine but don't rely on it as it rarely works. There is also a money exchange which would be the best choice. Do not exchange money from the street vendors! It is illegal and they give a really bad rate.
The immigration offices are basic but surprisingly efficient and fast. No hassles experienced. Just make sure that you give the officer the exact number of Nights (not days) that you will be staying in Malawi or to be safe give a few extra days. This especially applies to people who don't require visa or who get visa at the border.
I had the unfortunate experience of giving the exact days and apparently committed an offence on my return for returning back on the day the visa was expiring. Apparently I needed to return a day before. The officers on the Malawi side did try to get money out of me but eventually after four hours let me go because I was not paying and didn't have enough for the fine and it was clearly an honest mistake m

With efficient staff both on the Malawian and Tanzanian side the visa/exit/entry process is the least of your worries.

Where you need to keep your wits about you is the hoades of money exchangers, taxi drivers, bike riders and helping hands, all offering you their services.
