Lilongwe Technical College was established in 1963 with the overall goal of training and supplying craftsmen and women to meet the never-ending industrial demands. Three courses were offered in the early days, which included carpentry and joinery, Bricklaying and plumbing. However, the college experienced expansion between 1968 and 1983 during which Motor Vehicle Mechanics, General Fitting, Electrical Installation, Welding and Fabrication, Vehicle Body Repair and Refinishing, Machine Woodwork, Secretarial Studies and Accounting were introduced. The same period Carpentry and Joinery, and Bricklaying, moved to Namitete Technical College.
