Depending on flood levels the marsh can stretch from near Nchalo to the north down to Chiromo in the south. It is often accessed by boat from here at Mchacha James. The marsh’s reputation as an area of tranquillity and outstanding natural beautiful is richly deserved. While no longer having the elephants for which it was named it does have aquatic birdlife in great abundance (in excess of six hundred species).
