When looking for guest house accomodation in the Maldives, Sabba Summer Suite might well be one of your best picks!
One reason is the island Fodhdhoo itself. When checking it out on Google Maps, you can see that it's only lightly populated with still a lot of forest and remote beach areas. The colors of the sand and water and vegetation are as pristine as any catalogue or post card will have you believe, and the water has just the perfect temperature. Close by are sand banks you can visit and marine life is abundant, especially at some of the surrounding reefs. I really enjoyed the opportunity to have a beautiful beach in the south-western corner of the island all to myself. Also the main hotel beach is really nice, and with only a handful of tourists nothing would ever feel crowded. However, there one can make out noises from a construction project by the harbor that is scheduled to last till February 2018. Especially since the rest of the island is so incredibly peaceful with no cars at all, I found that a bit unfortunate, but I was just as happy with my own little beach :)
The other reason is the place itself and especially the people running it. Even before getting there, we chatted on WhatsApp and they helped me get local flights from Male to Ifuru ($100 per flight) from where they picked me up to get to Fodhdhoo by boat. The place itself has been newly constructed with three garden rooms that each have a little patio looking out to the well maintained grounds. The room itself was nice with a good AC unit, only the bathroom felt a bit stuffy and might benefit from more ventilation. All the meals are served on the large terrace. Its ground is covered with sand from the beach and the roof giving shade and fans creating air flow make it a very pleasant spot. The included breakfast menu changes daily with the Maldivian breakfast served on Friday being my favorite. For regular meals, I really enjoyed the opportunity to order fresh fish coming directly from the surrounding ocean every day (e. g. $15 for a whole grilled reef fish with rice and salad). The occasions when we all went fishing together and our host Abdullah would later prepare the catch on his large grill were no doubt real highlights!
Also all the staff are very friendly and attentive. While boat excursions off the island are not exactly cheap, one should consider that the boat is manned by at least three professionals who also happen to be great free divers (which added a lot to our snorkeling trips) and generally very knowledgeable about the sea. For example, we were lucky enough to spot dolphins on a couple of trips, and each time they were able to attract them directly to the boat with a combination of drumming and high pitched noises. The owners themselves take an active interest in the well-being of all guests and further developing the place. I wish them the best of luck for their plans and hope to be able to come back some day.
