So much detailed and incredibly well recorded history here. It is worth noting that the Sugar Factory give vouchers to the hotels to put in their welcome packs. These vouchers entitle you to a free sugar tour so it's worth enquiring about the vouchers from your hotel. Sugar Tour has something for adults and children alike. Shop is amazing too so take money. They sell the most incredible varied sugars, jams and honeys which you won't be able to buy in duty free on your way out. They also have some exquisite rum flavours but, again, worth buying on the day as you won't be able to get all the flavours in duty free. Well worth a visit.

It will probably last you about more than half a day if you are to visit AND learn about Mauritius, with a definitive focus on the sugar cane industry. As a local, I also got to learn a lot of new things about our history. Life was so different. Very well explained and illustrated with short videos and animations. You can take mini breaks and carry on with your tour. Very well made and maintained with a good focus on educational aspects for the school goers.
Parking is adequate. Restaurant is nice albeit a little pricey for the average Mauritian. Expect to shed about 20 Euros/head for lunch.
All in all a good place to discover and learn about Mauritius in the past!response / report this review -

Great museum. Firstly of all Mauritius culture secondly of a sugar factory process.
They also have sugar and rhum tasting and a gift shop of local products.

Although im not a big fan of museums, this one is not bad. Traces back the history of sugarcane in mauritius. I would still prefer some more interactive attractions, especially for kids. The shop is amazing though, totally worth a detour!

A sugar factory turned into a museum. All the original machineries are still intact. However they should have guided tours else it's just a waste of time. You would not understand anything about the process.
The rum tasting shop is good, and you can buy some flavours if you like them. Would recommend directly going to the shop rather than buying ticket and wasting money on the factory visit .

Amazing place, must see if you are on Mauritius. When you get there you feel the soul of imperialism and the idea of cane sugar industry. Museum is pretty interactive and offers plenty of information. And at the end you can try various types of cane sugar, cane by itselfs and most delitious local rums.

The best musem we visited in Mauritius. Besided sugar production, it provides lots of information on the history of Mauritius. You can easily spend there a half day.

Great place, facinating history of the place and beautifully restored. There is a LOT to read about Mauritian history as well as the production of sugar and the history of sugar. No toilets in the museum (or any that were easily identifiable) and its a long way around to get out.

If you like reading a lot of history this is the museum for you! You also get to walk through the old factory which was neat. Machines looked bigger than the working one at chamarel rhumerie. Also includes sugar tasting, honey and jam tasting and rum tasting.

Interesting but way too big to do in one go. It would be nice to have some rest area half way, maybe the rum tasting session 😋. About the rum tasting session at the end: the tasting portions are really micro sizes I know it is only tasting but I need more than 5 drops to awake my tasting papil.

Quite an extensive history of sugar making and how Mauritius came to be inhabited. Lots of reading along the way. Didn't really like any of the rums we tasted (far too harsh) so don't go just for that as it's really nothing special.

Interesting visit to an old sugar factory, now refurbished as a museum and general history of Mauritius. Worth the visit to know about the island history and get to know the when what and how things happened here. There's loads of information as well as quiz. Worth the visit but allocate at least 2h. Ends with rum a little tasting included.

This is definitely one of the premium attractions in Mauritius. The museum is interactive and child friendly although you need to allow more time if you want to get the most out of the exhibits. The sugar cane, sugar and rum tasting were excellently guided. Even though we were technically running out of time the staff didn't hurry us. It was well thought out and attractively designed. Other attractions Mauritius could learn from this presentation.

Decent place to take guests. Nice overview of Mauritian history in a retired sugar factory. Sugar is still processed in the same building and the grounds are quite nice with both a fast food and upscale restaurant.

“Ideal place to learn almost everything about Mauritius”
This is the ideal place to learn almost everything about Mauritius - from the discovery of the island to the actual process of sugar and rum-making. The visit also includes sugar and rum tasting, which are very interesting.
I visited once in 2004 and 10 years later it is still just as fascinating - budget on spending at least 2-3 hours there, a must-do if you go to Mauritius!
