Our wine of this week is Saronsberg Full Circle 2014
Saronsberg winery is situated in Tulbagh, fourth older town in South Africa approx. 100 Km north of Cape town. Tulbagh is flanked on all sides by the mountains of the Upper Breede River the farm consists of two farm portions known as Waveren and Welgegund and was named after the commanding mountain who’s slopes are home to their vines, Saronsberg. The cellar is a contemporary building with a beautifully finished tasting room which is separated by a glass partition from the cellar so one can watch the wine been made while surrounded by Saronsberg´s art collection

After 2 weeks of severe drought ridden landscape we arrive at Springfield estate in Robertson. It was quite a difference to see a filled Dam, many others were just mud holes. Jeanette Brouwer who owns Springfield with her brother greeted us and gave the tour of the farm. Springfield is known for their Sauvignon Blank which many of you know. - Life From Stone- but she is getting even greater response for the
Miss Lucy
A white wine blend created to be paired with fish. Jeanette is a great sea food lover and she told us. “I always wanted to have a wine that I could just pull out of the fridge whenever I had seafood that goes well with mussels, kingklip as well as with Lobster. So one day my brother surprised me with this this Blend of Pinot Gris, Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc - perfect” And we can only agree. And so Miss Lucy is getting ready to swim to Malta and should arrive soon. Stay tuned.
PS Miss Lucy is one of several nicknames that the cape fisherman have given the red stumpnose a local fish that is endangered through extensive overfishing.

One of the highlights of our trip was a private tasting at the owners private celler with Carl Schulz the iconic Winemaker of Hartenberg and long time head of the South African winemakers guild. When we were outside amongst the wines he was always looking up to see if there was any sign of rain. It is a real problem here. All the farms are cut off the municipal water supply and for some that means no crop.
Carl opened some very rare bottles for us. 1997 Stork Mackenzie best Shiraz worldwide which really put Hartenberg on the map and gave a boost to the South African wine industry in total.
We tasted all their premium wines, the Gravel Hill, The Stork, The Mackenzie Blend, as well as the premium Chardonnay Eleonore, but also the new Riesling and the 2017 Chardonnay.
On a personal note sitting down with him you can’t find a more gentle and unassuming person. And all this taking place at the evening of my birthday made it even more special for me.

Brinks winery is one of the biggest grape producers in the Swartland. Some they also make into wine Ernst Brinks in the middle is 80 years old and still in charge. Haunam his son runs the tasting room and when he heard that we sell their wines in Malta he called his father who came with lighting speed in his old pick up to greet us. What a character! Like the wines they produce. One of few who make a 100% Petit Verdot. They didn’t want to do it anymore but when we told him that this wine has quite a few fans in Malta he promised to continue production this year!

Back at Mooiplaas, where we met up with Louis the winemaker. His brother Tillman is out in the wines and very worried. They need at least 25mm rain in the next 2 weeks. When they get it 2018 will be a great vintage as the grapes look very promising up to now not overripe but without any rain crops will be dramatically down.
Today was in the newspaper that without rain 3 Million Capetonians will be out of water by the 21. of April. Think about it! Than every person can get 25liter per day which he has to pick up at a distribution point. What happens to the elderly? Everyone is praying for rain.

Visiting Diemersfontein with David Sonnenberg and on the other photo with Winemaker Francois Roode. He created Harlequin a Shiraz Pinotage blend which opens a new avenue in Diemersfontein wines more fruit and smoother. Soon to be found in our store.

As you see we are high up close to the Atlantic shore. Great place for great wines. We already have the Iona one man Band red ( Syrah, cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot Mourvèdre and Vigonier) at the shop as well as the one man band white ( Sauvignon Blanc Semikolon). Sowe'll se what comes next. So many more like the Mr. P Pinot Noir and the Sauvignon Blanc are outstanding.

These are the lovely Ladies from Allesverlooren one of the oldest wineries in the Swartland. We were very surprised that most of their grapes are Portuguese varieties like Toriga National, Tinta Barrocco, Surao which the blend with Shiraz, Cabernets and Petit Verdot. Great Wines !

Derwaldt Heyes has bought grapes from his fathers former farm and made them into wine under his name Derwaldt Heyns. These are two bottles of his 2011 Chenin Blanc which don’t even have a bottle. I “stole” them and will bring them to Malta in my luggage. He opened a bottle during our picnic up in the mountain and it was the best Chenin I ever tasted. See you at the shop after the 27th!
