Life changing. Recommended to all. 10 day Goenka vipanssana course is a must. Shady well treed facility with squirrels, crows and the requisite dogs. Rooms are basic but even in the cool season the lack of hot water is ok. Hot season would be challenging with only fans in dining hall and bedrooms but meditation hall has lots of aircon. See dhamma dot org for details of course dates.
I had my first 10-day Vipassana Meditation Course here in 2017. The facilities are a bit old (no hot water for shower, no air-con, etc.). The staffs here are friendly and helpful; the course is very useful.
The teaching is certainly non-sectarian as it is advertised - sifting through the mysticism and unnecessary rituals is required to glean some tangible, non-religious benefit. The technique is shrouded by the pseudoscientific ramblings of a charismatic orator. Each unintelligible sentence is followed by "it is a law of nature".
Though the center itself is in general disrepair, the accommodations are acceptable and the food is decent. As somebody else mentioned the teachers are not sympathetic to any injuries. The silence is conducive to concentration, but there is some center across the street that absolutely blasts music sometimes from 8am-9pm non-stop, sometimes it can feel more like an EDM retreat.
If it is your first time and you are skeptical of buddhism, i.e. not interested in freeing yourself from the cycle of reincarnation, then I would recommend finding a center that emphasizes the actual teaching of vipassana rather than soliciting for donations and service.
Highly recommend if you are interested in doing your Vipassana. Burma was the birth place of the pure form of Vipassana. This is one of the first centres Gorenke Ji created. Also great food which is a plus!
One of those leading meditation center in Yangon. It's little quite place in the heart of Yangon. It's have 10 days meditation course for starter. Once you have finish starter 10 days course there has shorter refresher course as well. It's a bit challenging to go silent for your very own 10 days. They will provide you with the basic room to stay with 3 meals per day. It's free of charge and if you wish you could donate to center. The center is running by pure donation.
A bit noise around the area. But the most quiet and peaceful place in town.
Great facilities, teachers, and community. If you're looking for an vipassana experience look no further
😃
A great place to get introduced to vipassana meditation method practiced by S.N Goenka.
Most of the time, it is a group sitting.
Requires Silence all the time except during interactions with the teacher or helpers.
Accommodation is ok. Need to share a small room with a fellow yogi.
Start the day around 4am and in bed by 9:30pm. About 90 minutes rest time in the morning after breakfast and another 90 minutes in the afternoon after lunch.
Food is vegetarian and good. Only two meals a day, breakfast and lunch. Fruit juice in the evening replaces dinner. If you did not achieve much in meditation, at least you leave the center a few pounds lighter in weight.
Do be mentally prepared. It is about 11 hours of sitting meditation every day with 5 minutes breaks in between 1 hour or 2 hour sessions.
It was my first Goenka Vipassana experience and it was absolutely fantastic. The centre is great, very quiet and comfortable. The food and facilities were very good. The help from all the servers and the teachers was exceptional. I totally fell in love with the country and ended up staying 3 months in Myanmar.
The course got me hooked up on the technique and I've been practicing since. I can definitely recommend taking Vipassana at Dhamma Joti.
I applied to do the ten day course here while I was working in Vietnam on the recommendation of a friend. I've been on long retreats before (Zen) over six weeks and was interested to try. I have a medical issue, damaged/weakened thigh muscle so I cannot get up and down off the floor, but apart from that I'm OK, meditate in a chair, teach full time etc. So I filled in the online application explaining the problem and that I would need a chair. I received my filled in application by return together with an acceptence/invitation letter, so I travelled overland to Yangon.
When I arrived there was no record of my application at all. I had my invitation printed out so the course manager interviewed me and I explained about the chair and he said it was fine, and put a note on my registration to provide one, and they found me a space.
The course started and the head teacher said a chair will not be allowed, I can only have one cushion. So I struggled with it and was kind of OK, but then at the end of the day I had to kneel before him in a small group to receive individual instruction. I couldn't do it because luckily me meditation seat was near the wall and I used the windowsill to push myself up to a standing position, but the teaching is in the centre of the room. I begged for a chair or someone to help but he just said it's the rules, either kneel down now, or leave. This was in the middle of a packed, silent meditation hall, two hundred silent people, I had to walk out, pack and be thrown out on the side of a mountain to find my way back to Yangon.
Considering that the website said a chair is allowed, and I was invited after explaining the issue, I'm not very happy. The staff there were quite nasty, and the teacher became like a lawyer, twisting everything to make it look like I'd done something wrong.
I do not recommend this place.
