We (a family of four) stayed a week three in early April 2018. We enjoyed the hospitality of Greg and his diligent staff. The place is clean and very relaxed. The nearby mangrove provides shelter from the wind, so it is very plesant even if the wind is strong out in the bay. The wind was quite light as it was just the beginning of the season (15-20 knots). My son, who was 12 at that time, and I had kite lessons in the morning. The instructors were very friendly and helpful. In the afternoon I was windsurfing although the wind was not strong enough to have planning every day. In the meantime the ladies of our family coud enjoy the sun without sand being blown into their eyes. Unfortunately we learned very late what we could use against the sandflies. Another inportant fact is that malaria profilaxis is not needed there. There are people there, who have been living there for more than 19 years and never had it. The lodeges have bednets.
Great place. Nice location and superb beach. Tricky underfoot on the shore and in the sea until you swim so take beach shoes. Our visit included entertainment in the evening.
Spent a week there in June in this windy paradise. We really enjoyed the beach bungalow at this beautiful location. The flatwater can be a bit shallow and choppy, but the waves are really awesome. We particularly enjoyed the good cuisine great in taste and variety. The team is nice as well, will come back one day! :D
The best spot I ever went to. Perfect wind.. always. Great atmosphere.. u feel out of the world & privileged..
extremely friendly staff, good food, and great prices..
it doesn't come better!
I went there three times already the wind is always there, the food is great, and the authentic and relaxed atmosphere Staff has always been very friendly. Sure, you don't always have electricity or hot water 24/7 but that's the "ECO" part in "ECO"-lodge, it's an authentic experience, not a soulless formatted 5 star Hilton. So set your expectations right, go with the flow, keep an open mind and you will have an amazing experience. Can't wait to go back!
Top location. Really nice comfortable bungalow. The food is great and varied. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. And the hotel is the only place in the bay that is sheltered from the (very strong) wind. Will be back.
i just spent over a month at sakalava lodge and really liked the place.
the staff is really friendly (can't understand any complaints of others at all..), kitesurfing is awesome at the bay, also liked the kite rental (airush 2017).
food was delicious, maybe a bit overpriced.
the seaside bungalows are nice, the cheaper ones towards the countryside could get some renovation, but still felt comfortable there. bugs can be a problem indeed, but there is always something you can do against it. and of course all bed are covered with moscito-nets.
can't say whether other places at the bay would have been better. i liked the atmosphere a lot & met plenty of fun people to hang out with - speaking some french is a big plus though..
so if you're interested in meeting new people & wanna kite (flatwater or waves) on a beautiful spot with very high wind guarantee, i can definitely recommend this place.
The place is very run down and would need a fresh paint job. We stayed there for a week and had no water in the bathroom for 3 days, the staff has been terribly unhelpful and rude when we asked for a solution to take a proper shower, mentioning it wasn't their fault The only positive point is the Sakalava Bay which is paradise on earth. I would advise to look for the other kite resorts nearby that look much "newer"and well managed.
I came here last summer upon seeing good reviews from their website and I was TERRIBLY disappointed. I was NOT SATISFIED with the facilities and the services. I didn't understand why the bungalows were priced very high, considering the amount of bites I had! The worst part was that the OWNER was very IMPOLITE! I even had my complains TRANSLATED for him but he still wouldn't give me a refund! Forget about this place. You'll only get frustrated!
We were there in August and were so disappointed… The bungalows are utterly expensive. Since walls and floors are made of wood, insulation is really bad : bugs such as cockroaches and spiders come through at night. My husband was bitten by fleas dwelling in the mattress. On top of that, the owner is an arrogant guy who spends his day shouting ard that his place is the best and others are craps. Frankly? Look around! He is unfriendly and just don’t give a sh.. about his business and his customers as long as he can go surf… Kitewise speaking this part of the beach is the worst of the bay: apart from the buzzing mosquitoes, the nearby mangrove creates so many deadly turbulences that you have to walk 10minutes on the beach to be able to find a place to launch properly. The food is under average and most of the customers wd rather go eat in the gargotes or other resorts nearby. Just forget this rotten place and go somewhere else.
This hotel gave me prostate cancer and HIV. It also gave me herpes.
I ran into a deer that looked like the wind
