  On the last full day of vacation I had a go on the ball machine that turned in to an impromptu lesson. Great staff and coach.

  In early November while on vacation at Oyster Bay Resort, I learned of the American Tennis Academy from the resort's Activities Center. I phoned Oliver Becaud the owner and master teacher and told him I had brought my racket and was looking for a "tennis experience." He described his background and facility, and I was immediately interested. The following morning I drove to meet Oliver (about 10 miles from Oyster Bay and on the French side of the island). From that point on I was hooked and took three one hour private lessons. I have played tennis for 35 years and Oliver worked with my bad habits with extraordinary patience and sensitivity. Each day I wrote down the major teaching points of the lesson and reviewed them with him the following day. We both worked very hard at this project. Since returning home, I have practiced with my ball machine and have now been able to incorporate most of his sage recommendations quite naturally and to develop the required changes in preparation, approach and follow through. Oliver is a dedicated teacher who gains immeasurable satisfaction from seeing his students improve. His facility was created by him and his wife Jennifer from scratch and they are proud of the reaction they get from all their students. My intent was to take one lesson but took three and gained more satisfaction from this experience than snorkeling, jet skiing, or fishing. I suppose, "each to his own." If you are a tennis minded vacationer, call Oliver and let him work with you. Let him make you feel good no matter what skill level you presently have. My bet is you won't be able to take only one lessonI know I couldn't!
