Definitely worth a visit. The smell can be tammed by the mint.
Worth paying 5 dirhams to go on a terrace and take as many pictures as you like!

Very interesting, but be aware of the viewing process. In short, you will be taken to the rooftop of one of many local leather stores that surrounds the tannerie. You are not visiting the tannerie itself, but the rooftop viewing area of an overpriced (for the area) leather goods store. Once you approach the general area, a number of runners in the area will try to guide you into their specific shop. I'm not sure there is a right or wrong choice, so go with whoever. You'll get a different salesman/guide once you actually arrive to the shop. Your guide will take you to the roof and explain the leather making process. After they will guide you onto the sales floor and show you a number of jackets and bags. Expect a slightly pushy sales pitch, but they are more than happy to show you around even if you don't buy. It can be intimidating to some, but if you don't want to buy just say so. If you do choose to buy, drive a hard bargain.

Treat it as a museum. It is good for photos, informative about leather production process. But there is a reason there are no locals to be found shopping here - this is not a place to shop, the prices are easily three told that of the zouk. Your 'guides' may ask for the tip - if you haven't asked them for a tour, you do not have to give money.

This is worth a stop,nice information on processing the skin, removal of hair with lime for a day, then soak and dry several days, sent to be tailored. Here is a tip for the tourists. Across from the university entrance is the police station. I suggest everyone as tourist should peek in Police station across to know where it is because in Fes you might need it. I was harassed at Narajeen Tannery, demanded 1000dir, and filed police report here. Upon exiting the police station the boy name Medi who “helped” me at police station and whom the police supposedly entrusted to help me after, further took advantage of my ignorance. Bait and switch! Told me his mom take me to local local Hammam bath experience for 300 dirah. And his mom took my $, and brought me to an old dirty bath house, I was afraid to even walk bare feet there. Medi also took me to a boutique shop where they asked 1000dir for a jalabaa robe, and 300dir for a pants, I paid 200dir for pants was told it is worth 30dir by local after! Three cheats nonstop day! You got love or hate Fes, too bad you as a city of faithful good educated people allow your visitors to be played like idiots! We are not and we are going to tell everybody NOT to visit your city. Unbelievable “hospitality” keep it to your stinking self! Too bad, I liked some people there genuine but will not return by choice, in the end it is your loss.

One of the things you must see in Fes, but be prepared: there is no other entering this area but through leather products selling shops. For exchange of the view you will be expected to either buy something there or pay 10 dirham "entrance fee". You also have to be careful when choosing which shop to enter, as not many of them really have the view you know from the famous pictures.

I was very dissapointed by the fact that I didn’t had the time to enjoy this place as I wished. If you have a guide bear in mind that he is working only with certain shops from the tanneries and he will guide you only there. Everybody is in a rush so until you understand what is going on…you are out! Too bad, because this place is a treasure and a must see when is Fes.

It can be eye opening and interesting if you go with an official guide. Try going alone and you'll be led to all sorts of unnerving places by the resident hustlers there. Google maps don't work all the time in morocco - your location is always in question here. Always bargain if you are interested in any of their wares. The legitimate ones allow payment by credit Card.

It is at the top of the places to visit in Fes. The leather processing has not changed since the Middle Ages. If you visit in the morning, you will have a chance to see the employees. Odor may be uncomfortable.

Definitely worth a visit. It's either 20dhs per person or you can buy a product. Make sure you go right to the top to see the whole tanning process plus the various rooms of different leather products. Staff gave us mint to smell to help cover the smell which was nice.

Extremely interesting to learn about their relatively organic process of dying the leather.

Make sure to go all the way up the stairs and explore the roof top for beautiful views of the medina.
