It has been interesting to see the process happening hidden in the city center but also very disgusting.
But make sure to NOT follow any guides (no matter how friendly and unrelated they may seem). They will hand you over to other persons and so it begins.
Just to tell my experiences: we met a little kid who told us it’s the last day of the leather market and we should follow along. He handed us over to an old man on a bike who promised not to want any money for leading us to the market. Being already suspicious we followed along a few minutes and reached the Tannerie where another guy handed us some mint leaves and walked us through it. Of course we ended up in a shop which is supposed to be some kind of collective of leather craftsman. Since I was interested in buying a leather bag (that’s why we started following in the beginning) I picked one and asked for the price (although I already saw that it was poorly made). The vendor asked for a price that was ten times (!) the price of what the same bag would cost at shops with fixed prices would ask for it. As I made clear that I do not even want to bargain with him for calling this price he got very pissed off and started to offend us. As we left the shop the other guy who showed us around waited outside (probably waiting for his commission) and insulted us too. We offered to give 20 MAD for showing us around he asked for 100 MAD and other men joined the discussion.
We left (forcing him to take the 20 MAD) and a bad feeling of being stupid and betrayed. One of the worst experiences in Marrakech.

Would have been incredibly interesting, but the whole visit was a scam, setup from the start by locals to get money out of you. Whilst visiting the Ben Youssef Madrasa Islamic College (worth going to) we were approached by a guy in a Berber coat who spoke good English and told us that we may find the Tannery's interesting, and that today was the last day that it was open to the public as the workers were returning to their villages in the mountains the next day,
After we'd looked round the Madrasa he offered to walk us there, telling us there was no charge. He was very knowledgeable about the Berbers and how the Tannery worked differently from the traders in the Souk. He led us to the site and handed us over to a younger guy who gave us some mint leaves to disguise the smell, I knew it would be smelly, but it also felt very unsafe wandering around open vats filled with ammonia and animal bits and rushing from one side of the site to the other over rotten leather and plastic sheets and rock, before being taken up to the roof to show where we were in relation to the Medina, a long way away!
Next we were taken to a local co-operative to look at the admittedly extremely good looking leather products, the young guy left us in the hands of the "owner". I had to tell him that we were not able to buy anything as we had no money on us, he said he would take cards or cheques or deliver to our hotel where we could pay later. He soon realised that we weren't interested and he marched us out of the shop.Only to find the guy from the Tannery's waiting, at first i thought it was to show us the way back to the Souks as we were pretty much lost, but he wanted payment for his services. He asked for 400 Dirhams, I refused to pay and he got angry and aggressive and a couple of men also appeared and joined in, I stood my ground and walked away, whilst being called various names. A couple of women were also turned on by another guide and they didn't have the confidence to refuse and handed over 500 Dirhams.
We felt very unsafe at the end, but with the help of Google maps we found our way out!
My advice, ignore anyone who offers to take you to the Tannery's, especially if they mention special days. Just don't go, if you want leather goods just go to the Souk or ask a real approved Guide for advice!

J ai apprecié la visite de la tannerie
On ne s imagine pas ce travail avant la confection d un vetement ou d un article de maroquinerie
Les ouvriers ont de tres mauvaises conditions de travail mais toujours le sourire aux levres
