Refuge Taffert is an amazing place constructed around the 1930's (I heard either 1929 or 1935 from various local sources). As of this post, the refuge falls under the administration of Ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports in Morocco but it can be opened to tourists if you call ahead.
From Fes, it will take you about 3 hours to driver there on steadily degrading roads. However, all but the last 1-2 kilometers of rugged forest track are passable in a standard vehicle, albeit bumpy! The drive is remote and beautiful. If in a car, DO NOT follow the track marked on Google Maps that goes to the right off of P5115. Instead, while you are still on R504 driving through the Cedar forest follow the track to the right (see a picture below).
The refuge is severely degraded lacking running water, electricity or toilets. However, there is a natural spring less than 200 meters away where you can get clean and ice-cold drinking water. There are candles available for lighting and upstairs there are decent mattresses and some heavy blankets although I would prefer to use my own sleeping bag there. You may find that camping outside is more comfortable away from the bats.
The location, however, is absolutely stunning with old-growth cedar forest, natural springs and a great starting point for an attempt on Bouiblane. I have used this as a parking spot for my climb of Bouiblane and I have also spent the night here with my kids - Ali, the caretaker was really kind. It was a nice sheltered place from the wind while still allowing us to explore remote natural areas.response / report this review -
