Beautiful mosque and beautiful gardens. Very quiet, very well kept. You can feel very at peace there. The mosque is beautiful, it's wonderful to be near such an historical monument.

Beautiful setting however there was no sign of how to go in, or do anything? The area around it is very busy and a lot of people!

Don't get it! Really nice from the outside but no admittance to non Muslims so can only guess what it's like inside. Nice small garden area behind it to sit and catch some rays. Really looks good out up at night and is great for getting your bearings as it's the highest building in the city.

The place is mind-blowing from the distance and even so as you get more close to it.

You can't get to the inside but can see it from the outside. If you want you can even cross the street and have a nice walk at the park and seat at a bench and enjoy the view.

It's even better when the sun is going down.

The city of Marrakesh was captured by Almohads after the death of the Almoravid leader Ali ibn Yusuf in 1147.[9][10] The Almohads did not want any trace of religious monuments built by the Almoravids, their staunch enemies, as they considered them heretics. Abd-al-Mu'min, who won the territory, was responsible for building the first Koutoubiya mosque on the grounds of the former palace of Ali ibn Yusuf in the southwest quarter of the medina. This first mosque was built between 1147 and 1154 and completed in 1157.[1] This initial mosque was rebuilt under the Almohad Caliph Yacoub El-Mansour, as it was realized halfway through construction that the mihrab (prayer niche) was misaligned and not oriented towards Mecca,[4] and underwent many changes until the end of the 12th century, when the Andalusians defeated the Almohad dynasty. The alignment problem was a minor issue, as devotees could always adjust the direction when offering prayers in the hall, but the decision was taken to build a new mosque alongside the first structure.[6] The first mosque was completed while the second mosque was undergoing construction. The second mosque was built identical to the first except for its orientation. The layout, architectural designs, inscriptions, dimensions and materials used for construction were all the same.[1] The minaret plan and design remained the same in both buildings.[1] While in the first mosque, the orientation of the mihrab was 5 degrees out of alignment with respect to the direction towards Mecca, in the second mosque, the orientation was 10 degrees off, thus actually further out of alignment with Mecca than the first mosque.

A nice minaret however not much to see for non-Muslims, who aren't allowed in. There are some limited gardens around the mosque. There were also some ongoing restoration works at time of writing- perhaps it will be better after this. I wouldn't recommend.

This location still used for worship, non-muslims are not allowed inside. But it is well worth seeing from the outside.

Good for a photo, not much more to see. Non-Muslims cannot access the interior. Make sure you know it or you'll be rudely informed.

Beautiful architecture, I would recommend you visit here if you're in Marrakesh. Good vibe all around, lots of tourist taking pictures, families sitting around just enjoying themselves. Inside the Mosque is beautiful

An amazing architecture world heritage monument.One of the must visit places in Marrakesh. This place have a certain good vibe that charges you with positive energy. You feel the live history of the surrounding area. On the sunrise the shades are playing around the building. On the sunset the amazing colors of the sky reflect and paint the building giving the visitor on of the most beautiful mind pictures to remember.Get your camera ready! !!
