This Carrefour Market, one of about five that now exist in Tangier (as of the beginning of 2018), is located on Route de Tanja Balia, up a steep hill from Malabata and Avenue Mohammed VI. The supermarket is located in the somewhat small Malabata Mall, and there are a dozen or so parking spaces available directly in front of this mall.
I had discovered this Carrefour while on a long walk exploring the Malabata area, and eventually ending up at Cappuccino, an upscale cafe-restaurant near the Hotel Movenpick. On this long but pleasant walk downhill towards the beach, I passed some cows and camels grazing on a large plot of vacant land (which hopefully will never be developed with high rise buildings that seem to be springing up in the area).
I immediately noticed that on one side of the mall there was a place called Boston, mainly for breads and pastries, and with only one small round table to sit for a coffee. On the lower level down some stairs there is a fitness center, Tangym Fitness & Spa, with the Carrefour entrance directly in front of you as you enter the mall’s one and only main entrance.
This Carrefour is clean but substantially smaller than the huge Carrefour in the very large and upscale Socco Alto Mall, diagonally across from Boubana Cemetery, and it does not sell mattresses, small carpets, or large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, air-conditioners, etc.
I explored most of the various aisles and
noted that have a good selection of fresh produce, a butcher (including the first large turkey I had ever seen in a supermarket in Tangier), and all the other items you need for your kitchen or household. Some items were marked down with promotion signs.
I bought some Gillette razor blades and was pleased that when I checked out a friendly and polite cashier spoke good English.
If I lived in this area of Tangier, I would not hesitate to shop here on a regular basis. You may also get here by Autasa bus, taking the number 14 bus from Place des Nations downtown. Another bus, number 20, also passes on the road in front of the Malabata Mall and Carrefour.
