Journey to the Stone Age with SEB.

I would like to share my experience at SEB branch in Kaunas while trying to open a bank account today – 13.12.2017. I was advised by the member of staff to file a complaint, however I prefer to tell the story as it happened (with my commentary) so that every reader can make his own opinion. We are all humans and I may be wrong on this.

Intro: I am a Czech national (and therefore EU citizen), I worked and lived in my home country, Italy, UK and now I am going to work and live in LT as I was offered a job in Kaunas by an international company. I have got Czech passport, ID, driving license, I have got LT address and I have got the offer of employment from the company I am going to work for – I am starting my job next month. I am going to stay in LT for next few years and therefore I would like to open a bank account at SEB as this bank was recommended by my friends.

I arrive at the Kaunas branch, explain my situation, the receptionist calls somebody to confirm what to do, hangs up and tells me they are not going to open an account for me. My natural reaction is question „why“?

Apparently, and I quote: „You do not need a bank account because you are not employed“.

(since when the bank or any person behind the counter decides whether I do or do not need a bank account, I am clearly asking to open one and therefore I feel I need one. I am starting the job next month and I believe it makes sense to open an account in advance, I also may need to pay rent, utilities etc)

I replied ok, however I have got enough money in other countries (which I am willing to prove if I have to) and I would like to transfer some to my LT account.

The reply is and I quote: „You do not an account for that, just use Western Union transfer and then use cash“.

(my jaw dropped after hearing this and my blood pressure went up rapidly, Am I dreaming or what? Why would anybody say this to a potential customer?)

In disbelief, I continued questioning and was told again, I quote: „You are not employed and you are not a student either so you do not need a bank account“.

(what about lets say women on maternity leave, pensioners, people who just lost their jobs etc, are all of these not allowed to open an account either because they are unemployed? Why students have more rights to open an account than somebody with enough money and starting a job soon? Most students do not even have any regular income).

I mentioned I lived and worked in different countries and never had any issue with banks like this, I was told I quote: „Then just use your foreign cards and accounts you have with those banks“.

(I was starting to understand I was getting nowhere here)

And the final piece I was told, I quote: „Once you get the contract from your company come back and we will open an account“. Seems like the offer of employment is not good enough.

(Are you crazy? Do you really think after this experience I will ever enter any SEB branch again? Has the bank the right to demand to see my work contract? Cant see why I would have to share the details of my contract with anybody in order to open an account? Do all Lithuanians have to disclose work contract in order to open an account?)

After hearing so much nonsense in lets say 2-minute conversation I just turned around and walked away.
