Great monument and one of scenic places in Vilnius Marathon route.
On 23rd August 1987 a meeting (about 1000 participants) to remember the anniversary of infamous Molotov & Ribbentrop pact (23.08.1939, the agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to devide the Central and Eastern Europe, which initiated World War II) took place near this statue.
At that time Lithuania was still occupied by Soviets and this shockingly brave event is believed to be a start of the movement for the country's Independence (known as 'Sąjūdis'), with massive nation-wide meetings and protests that took place the following year.
This year (2017) we celebrate the 30th anniversary of that initial meeting.
Beautiful place.
