Sri Mamangeswarar temple is one of the famous temple in not only in Batticaloa but also in Sri Lanka. It has a historic relationship with Ramayanam. According to the history this is the place where King Raman vershipped god Shiva and the pond next to the temple is the place where Hanuman cooled his tail after burning the King Ravanans kingdom because King Ravanans set fire on his tail.

This temple is one of the oldest in Batticaloa. The temple is said to be constructed at the place where Lord Rama had done prayers towards Lord Shiva, while in search of Seeta. The temple had the name of Mamanga Eashwara earlier, but has now come to be known as Mamanga(m) Pillayar.
