Description

Kulankai SIngai Ariyan the first King of Jaffa, who build Nallur the capital city of Jaffna Kingdom, also erected a beautiful edifice for Kailaya Nathar (Load Siva and Parvathi Ambal). That Kailaya Nathar Kovil was a grand temple and was inaugurated with great splendour, on the 13th century. It continued as sacred sthalm all through the four century – period of reign of the Tamil Kings.
In 1620, when the Kingdom of Jaffna fell to the Portuguese, this temple was destroyed, along with over 50 other temples in Jaffna. Years later, the local people discovered a Pillayar statue amoung the debris of demolished structure and placed it under a tree for reference. In 1850 Arumha Navalar, a dignitary of the place, had a small shed erected over it. A shrine, called the Kailaya Pilliyar Kovil, thus commenced which was gradually improved into a temple by our elders.
In response to the desire of the public, C.Suntharam and later his sister Manika Ammiyar, with the help of others, rebuilt the temple in 1946, installing an additional Siva Linga Moorthi and Ambal Devi. The name of the temple then became Kailasanatha Pillayar Kovil and had a two way entrance. In 163, a Pancha Muga Pillayar was installed and other improvements effected by C.Suntharalingam.
Now This Royal Temple is managed and the maintains of the temple is taken care by the Chief Priest Sri K. Kurusamy Sarma Kurukkal and he is the descendant of Sri Gangadhara Iyer of Kashi (Benares) in India.
