Historically important place but place is bloody littered.. everywhere i look i can see tons of garbage!! Thats very sad to see.. and that River also very dirty people who come to worship this place throw there garbage to the river. I disappointed about management of this place.

Sella Kataragama area has been developed as an another multi cultural area attracting all walks of life from Buddhists, Hindus and the indigenous Veddas.

To enter the sacred area you need to cross the Menik Ganga ( river ). The walk from the car park to the river is lined with shops selling sweetmeats to toys to memorabilia. On the other side of the river lies a plethora of kovils and devales including a Ganapathi Kovil, a Siva Kovil, a Kataragama Kovil, a Valliamma Kovil, a Lakshmi Kovil and Saman Devalaya and a temple dedicated to king Mahasen called Mahasen Viharaya

Nice tourist destination. The kovil dedicated to Lord Ganesha attracts many local devotees along with foreign guest to witness the Pooja taking place. Street shops are available to buy various souvenir and exclusive food such as kaludodol. Juice stalls are also available to cool off.
Nice place to visit, except during the holiday season when it becomes a bit too crowded.
Visit the fortune teller who read ur palm with quite some accuracy and take a minute to walk around. But beware the monkeys in the area who try to steal a quick meal of the baskets of fruits used as offerings for the Pooja.

It's less crowded when compared with the Ruhunu Katharagama Dewalaya and smaller in comparison as well. The Manik ganga flows next to the dewalaya and it has created a really beautiful scenery.
